ππ Happy World Bee Day!
As beekeepers, honey bees are of course our world β we're with them day in, day out, watching them work, keeping them healthy and marvelling at what they do. But today is a wonderful reminder that honey bees are just one small part of an incredible bigger picture.
There are hundreds of species of native and wild bees out there β and they are every bit as vital. Since we started keeping bees in our garden we have noticed a real difference in the variety of bees visiting our plants and flowers. More bumblebees buzzing about, mason bees nesting in the garden, even carpenter bees turning up β and we are sure there are plenty more native species quietly going about their business that we haven't even spotted yet! πΈπΌ
A small number of well managed honey bee colonies in an area can genuinely help boost local biodiversity β encouraging pollination across a wider range of plants and helping the whole local ecosystem to flourish alongside them. That knock on effect for the natural world around us is something we feel really passionate about.
Yes, we love our honey. Yes, we are proud of our honey bees. But watching the wider natural world thrive around them? That is honestly just as rewarding. π―πΏ
Here's to all the bees β every last species of them. ππ
