Collecting swarms can happen in all weather. These poor girls swarmed yesterday we think but did not find any shelter to stay dry. They are cold and wet but the queen was seen and still alive. Popping them into a nuc so they can warm up and dry off.

Not good when you are 5'6" and the stack of supers is over 7' high. This is great though as they are bringing in lots of nectar. Makes inspections a little more tricky 😂.

One less going into someone's chimney or roof!

We have just had a lovely incoming swarm come to our bait hive at home. Such an amazing wonderful sight and sound. They really do enter quickly.

We did suspect they were on their way as there has been a lot of attention around the hive for the last couple of days.

I am expecting a lot of swarms in the next few days because the weather has been so poor but will improve dramatically allowing them to find a new home.

Just checked some of my queen rearing attempts. Still very inexperienced in this, both in grafting and mating, so everything is such a learning curved full of mistakes and lessons.

But so far 3 out of 4 checked all emerged, the other one still capped - quite pleased with that. Let's just hope the weather warms up and they can get mated.

Very interesting swarm collection today. The ideal height for bees is about 5.4m. The bees had clearly not read the script. This one was under the floor of a shed. The thermal image was great at showing their position. Luckily this was an empty shed at the sales office and they had a convenient fork lift to lift it off the ground.

All now safely rehoused in a more suitable home.

Just had a routine visit from the Seasonal Bee Inspector Ewan checking up on the bees we are selling and the overall health of our bees and apiary.

A great experience and learning event, especially receiving some useful tips and even compliments about the bees. We received a general clean bill of health with no signs of foalbrood.

All in all a great experience and would recommend it to all beekeepers and not to be afraid of the SBI.

Anyone for a mummy? One of our hives is showing a bad case of chalkbrood caused by a fungus. This is made worse by the cold damp weather. The young larvae are infected and die becoming hard like little mummified pupae.

The bees will normally sort this out but we definitely need to keep and eye on it. It a common problem especially early in the year when the hive is less full and cooler.
