Time to treat for Varroa!

I'm using an authorised treatment (i.e. expensive!) which is pure oxalic acid (with sugar). Using a battery-powered "Instavap," the chemical is heated to 230°C and sublimates into a v***r. Don't worry, the bees are unharmed, but the mites definitely aren't.

Timing is important, the mites are usually hidden away in capped brood cells with the larvae, where the v***r can't reach them. That's why we treat now (mid-December to January), while the queen has stopped laying and there is nowhere for the mites to hide.

Also, spotted a fallen tree during my apiary checks today... the work never ends!

At this time of the year it's a chance to make hive repairs, this is a queen excluder designed to stop the queen laying in the honey supers.
