Flying the flag for nature: I had a feeling there was an Oyster Catcher's nest on the marsh. They were hanging around and making a racket. Now I've found it. It has been clearly marked with a flag pole to stop anyone inadvertantly disturbing them. They don't seem to mind the sheep milling about and Rich is banned from mowing thistles!

The open gate paradox
Rule 1 of farming is 'SHUT THE GATE!'. This gate has been open for weeks, deliberately. All the other pigs have gone through their opened gates and moved to their summer paddocks weeks ago. Delilah on the other hand has voted with her feet and chosen not to use either her feet or the open gate.
Muddy wallows, delicious weeds and rootling lie in the destination but she is unmoved by the prospect. Why, why, why Delilah!

Bloody pigs is a phrase that simply just rolls off the tongue of anyone who keeps pigs! It was uttered a few times early this morning in this house. Fence shorted out and then so were they. Thank you to Brian Rivett , Sidney Fost, Katie Bond, June White, Claire Wright and Alan Rushmore for the various alerts. Sorted now. Time for a medicinal bacon sarnie. Got to be some perks ...

Three years ago this video was filmed. I thought at the time that Arrabella was on her way out. Happily that time she recovered and enjoyed another 3 years of retirement, apples, wallows.and belly scratches. Unfortunately in her OAP status she recently decided that getting up was impossible and even my turkey baster treatment was unsuccessful. So today we said goodbye to the very first pig to arrive at Thatched House Farm. RIP Arrabella 2015-2025. Today is a tough day!

VETS, NOT FOR PETS BUT PROFIT! Why pet owning farmers have a unique perspective on what is a tax on your emotions.
Today the Competion and Markets Authority published a report into the practices of small animal vets and it is highly critical of the pricing practices of what are now largely corporately owned vets. We all love our furry companions like members of the family and this love is being shamelessly expoited for commercial gain.
The reason I can say this with such conviction is because I am one of the few that can directly compare veterinary practices in farming with those for our pets.
Farm vets in my experience are helpful, knowledgable and importantly keen to upskill and teach farmers how to better care for their animals and administer any medicines required themselves. They are pragmatic about costs and farm medicines are not exorbitantly expensive. For example i can vaccinate sheep myself for Footrot at about £1.50 per head.
Contrast this with the fact that although i am very experienced at delivering subcutaneous vaccinations I am not 'permitted' to do them on our dogs or cat. This results in a vet visit plus medicine cost per animal equivalent to being able to vaccinate a large flock of sheep. I was told this is because it is very important to determine the weight of a small animal which is in fact nonsense because most vaccination doses are weight invariant and even if they were not it is a lot easier to weigh a cat than Churchill the boar!
In addition i have noticed recently an increasing trend of pressure phone calls and reminders about vaccinations, parasite treatments etc all of which are priced much higher than medicines are available on line.
My advice is of course if your pet needs medical treatment then take them but please, ask for pricing upfront, look online for medicine pricing and dont be bullied or guilt tripped into getting anything unnecessary. If you have an independent practice near you support them and if you have options shop around!

After many days of shearing some back reparations are required. So grateful to Witching Kitchen for fitting me in for an emergency appointment! I now smell amazing (which for occupational reasons is rare) from all the essential oils and floated home in a rather uncharacteristic Zen-like bubble. She knows her witchy stuff!

Shear bliss but not shear brilliance:
We have just completed the epic feat of shearing our sheep. Having been let down very late in the year by our usual shearer we decided (being the stubborn buggers we are) to do it ourselves. So clippers purchased we tackled them between all the other jobs and the rain showers (can't shear a wet sheep). The end result is two bad backs, a tenuous marital status and not very pretty sheep (see below). I am on cloud nine now it is finally done hence the shear bliss but unfortunately I now have to look at the end result everyday.

When you are in a pickle it is heartwarming to know that some friends don't hesitate to come to the rescue. Thank you so much to Tom Beevor and Robert Beevor from Hillfield Nursery & Farm Shop for going out of their way to help with a tow! We owe you some beers!

Early morning woodland pig feeding was curtailed by some nasty exhaust smoke followed by a kerput landrover. It means unfortunately we aren't at Beccles Farmers Market today.
