Tuesday morning, and the bees are making the most of the October sunshine. 🐝☀️🍂

By October, the colony is beginning to wind down for winter. Natural sources of nectar and pollen are becoming much scarcer, so these warm, sunny days are precious, giving the bees a chance to get out and forage while they can, before they settle into their winter routine.

And here on the farm, our sunflowers and purple vetch are still providing a valuable source of forage for them. 🌻🐝 It’s lovely to see the benefit of the work we’re doing through the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), creating space for pollinators and wildlife alongside food production.

A little patch of October sunshine, a whole lot of buzzing, and plenty of busy bees getting ready for winter. 💛🌾

🌱 A little insight from the potato fields…

After more than 3 inches of rain over the end of last week and through the weekend, potato harvest is continuing in near-ideal conditions.

Why? It all comes down to the soil. 🥔

These fields have a very high sand content, meaning the soil has a relatively low moisture-holding capacity. That can make for challenging conditions during a long, dry summer, but when the weather changes and the rain arrives, it can be a real advantage.

The result? The soil drains quickly, allowing us to get back onto the fields and keep harvest moving. 🚜

It’s a great example of how soil type, weather and farming practices all work together to determine what happens in the field.👨‍🌾🥔

We’ve drafted in some extra help! 🐝

A new workforce has arrived at the farm and has gone straight to work pollinating our pumpkin and squash plants. This should help increase the number of fruits each plant produces.

The containers are there to provide the purpose-built hives with shelter from the wind and protection from direct sunlight, helping to keep the bees happy and healthy.

Elsewhere in the pumpkin and squash fields, we’ve been busy hoeing with our inter-row w**der, removing w**d competition so the crop can reach its full potential. We’ve also been giving the plants a much-needed drink.

It’s a crucial stage for the crop as it’s now setting flowers, which will soon develop into the pumpkins and squash we’ll be harvesting later in the season. 🌱🎃

Water is one of the most valuable resources on our farm.

Every crop we grow depends on three essential ingredients: sunlight ☀️, water 💧 and nutrients 🌱. Together, they allow plants to grow, develop and ultimately produce the food that ends up on our tables.

During periods of hot weather, the connection between water and food becomes even more apparent. Without sufficient moisture in the soil, plants struggle to access the nutrients they need and growth can quickly slow.

That’s why monitoring soil moisture is such an important part of modern farming. While farmers have always assessed soil conditions through experience and field observations, today’s technology allows us to measure moisture levels more accurately than ever before. By combining traditional knowledge with modern soil moisture monitoring systems, we can better understand what is happening beneath the surface and manage this precious resource more effectively.

Every drop counts in helping us grow healthy crops and secure food production for the future.
