🍎🚚 Why can apples end up damaged during transport?

There are several factors that can contribute to damage, from handling and packing to loading and transport conditions. The good news is that there are practical steps growers can take to help reduce damage and improve the condition of the fruit when it arrives.

Listen in to hear what we would recommend growers implement to reduce damage and make the transportation process smoother from start to finish for apples.

🟣🟠🔴 This week’s beetroot came in every colour of the rainbow.

Classic deep red, golden, and candy-striped Chioggia — all grown organic, all pulled from the ground to reach your box.

Fun fact: beetroot was originally grown for its leafy tops, not the root. The Greeks and Romans were eating beet greens centuries before the root became the main event 🌿

Why organic matters here: beets grow underground and absorb whatever’s in the soil around them — so clean, unsprayed soil means a cleaner root. You’re also getting the full nutrient package: folate, potassium, fibre, and betalains (the pigment behind that colour, and a serious antioxidant).

Try this: roast a mix of colours whole, peel, then build a salad with rocket, goat cheese, toasted walnuts, olive oil + balsamic + a drizzle of honey. Keep the colours separated on the plate until the last second — the red bleeds fast 😅

Grown slow. Harvested fresh. Straight to your door.

Unfortunately, we’ve got no organic sweetcorn this week. The rough weather across the UK has meant that some crops simply aren’t ready yet, while others aren’t quite up to the quality.

But bear with us — we’re hoping to get more lovely organic sweetcorn in before the season comes to an end! 🌽☀️

🥦 Is your broccoli good or bad?

👀 Here’s what to look out for:

- Yellowing or browning florets — a sign it’s past its best.
- A strong, unpleasant smell — fresh broccoli should have a mild, earthy smell.
- Slimy or mushy areas — best to avoid these.
- Mould — if you see mould, it’s safest to throw the broccoli away.

💜 Purple florets — don’t panic! Purple broccoli can still be perfectly edible and is often caused by natural pigments from growing conditions or exposure to cooler temperatures.

💚 Fresh broccoli should have firm stalks and tightly packed, dark-green florets.

So before you put it in the bin, take a closer look!

That’s how it genuinely feels for us every time we handle fresh, organic fruit and vegetables.

There’s something incredibly special about knowing that the work we do, even in our own small way, can make a positive difference — for the environment, for our local community, and for the people who choose to support us.

Running a small business isn’t always easy. There are plenty of challenges, uncertain days and moments when you wonder whether all the hard work is worth it. But then we’re reminded why we started in the first place. We believe in what we do, we care deeply about the quality of the food we provide, and we love being able to build genuine relationships with the people who order with us.

For us, it’s about so much more than simply selling fruit and vegetables. It’s about creating connections, supporting better choices, reducing our impact where we can, and being part of something that feels meaningful. Every conversation, every order and every kind word from a customer means more to us than you probably realise.

We feel incredibly lucky to be able to keep doing what we love and to keep fighting for our small business. None of this would be possible without the amazing customers and community around us. Your support allows us to continue, to grow, to learn and to keep believing in what we’re building.

So, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you for choosing to support a small business, for caring about where your food comes from, and for being part of our journey. We’re truly grateful to have you with us. 💚

🌽 British Organic Sweetcorn is HERE — and this is the only time of year to get it right.

Most sweetcorn you buy has travelled thousands of miles and sat in storage for weeks. The second corn is picked, its sugars start turning to starch — so the fresher it is, the sweeter it tastes.

Ours is grown right here in the UK, organic, and delivered to your door within days of harvest. In season now through September, so don’t miss it. 🇬🇧
