Every day is surely, but today is so especially beautiful ☀️ here on the West Coast and the campaign this year is Our Power, Our Planet, with an emphasis on the choices we make, so we felt inspired to say something…

To us it’s obvious that fish is the most efficient of all the proteins, that the impact is low and increasingly so as we continuously improve our carbon footprint, and responsible farms can harmoniously sit within a healthy, biodiverse loch and both thrive - moreover, produce a food that’s extremely good for you.

But that might not be obvious to everyone else, so for this year’s Earth Day we are gently reminding you that knowledge is power, understanding the complexities of where your food comes from, not relying on headlines, and seeing it for yourself is (surely) the route to good choices and better outcomes. We publish our sustainability report online each year with an overview of where we’re at and with a commitment to transparency, so please, take a read. (Link in bio).

Farming is a 24-hour job and sometimes all the action happens at night. Our team have spent months prepping for this moment, and now our 15-month-old trout have graduated from freshwater and finally entered the sea at our Ardifuir site in Loch Craignish. 🌊

It’s their first taste of some first-class wild Atlantic waters that channel through the Inner Hebrides to create exceptional currents for them to swim against, and an outstanding habitat to grow in.

Always an exciting moment and especially considering these are the only trout in the UK to be reared in sea lochs from our own unique Scottish breeding programme.

Knowledge, learning, pioneering in health and welfare are central to the way we work at Kames, but the industry talk and initiatives are often centered around salmon. So it was with great delight that our Fish Health Manager attended the first trout-focused fish health seminar, initiated by STIM in Bergen this week. The main conversations were on nutrition, genetics, production and also practical field experiences in areas like disease control, vaccination and smoltification.

Sea-reared trout is deservedly rising in popularity, yet the challenges – particularly those thrown at us by climate change – continue to rapidly evolve, and collective brainpower and shared experience is invaluable and needed. Thanks to STIM for including us Scots! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
