In all this hot weather we've been having, we've been flat out with hot-weather jobs including making a massive amount of hay! We got a contractor in for the big round bales but have done all the small bales ourselves. We've been busy enough that Alyse has even been let loose with the baler...

🐴 Alyse's family have had a herd of wild ponies on the moor for generations, so the news this morning of extra protection and financial support for Dartmoor's Hill Ponies is well deserved recognition for a beautiful part of our heritage and moorland ecosystem, and definitely worth shouting about! The announcement is all about numbers and data, but will make a real difference on the ground to the future of this ancient Dartmoor icon. Well done everyone who campaigned so hard to get here!

Government Statement on Dartmoor Ponies
The Government has confirmed that Dartmoor ponies will be removed from stocking rate calculations in new Environmental Management agreements. Numbers will also be monitored and a new pony supplement introduced to encourage retention. Finally, the Dartmoor Land Use Management Group has been tasked with developing a whole-moor grazing framework ensuring all interests are considered together. 🐓 These girls don't often get much air time, but chickens have been part of the story since the beginning. Most of our current hens are ex-commercials, living out their days scratching around in more grass than they can eat! For older hens, they're still laying really well too, even in all this heat.

🥚You can now pick up some of their eggs from us at our regular markets:

📍TODAY Tavistock Bedford Square 9.30am-1.30pm
📍TOMORROW Hatherleigh Market 9am-1pm

With more hot, sunny weather on the way people have been asking how we keep our livestock cool in the extreme heat.

Aside from the obvious - lots of water, wallows for the pigs, shearing for the sheep - the answer has got to be our TREES!

Trees are amazing in that they not only provide shade, but they also release water vapour from their leaves in a process called transpiration. These water droplets evaporate and absorb heat energy which causes a significant drop in air temperature. With trees in and around every field, our animals can stay cool even on the hottest of days.

❗️We have made the decision not to attend Exeter Farmers Market today due to the red heat health alert, for the sake of our own health but more importantly because of the difficulties in trying to keep our produce cool in these temperatures. We're sorry for any disappoint, but we will be back next week!

🎪 With temperatures due to be lower tomorrow, we will be at Tavistock Market on Bedford Square 9.30am-1.30pm as usual with a load of fresh pork and hogget - see you there!
