I am concerned to see an increase in livery yards offering spaces with stables and a multitude of other facilities - that then tag on the end of the advert for retirement livery with full 24/7 turnout and perhaps access to a field shelter. Everyone knows that with age comes increased care needs (not less). Is it really appropriate or kind to take a horse that has probably lived a pampered life with stables and rugs and lots of attention, and think it will be happy just chucked out in all weathers? All horses are different and perhaps a few would be happy to left alone in a field; but from our experience we find that they thrive best with individual attention to their needs and preferences catered for. At Solland this is exactly what we offer in our horse led management system.
(Pictured is Carrie, who has very firm opinions about the need for a stable!... in the winter because she doesn't like the wet and in the summer because she doesn't like the heat & flies...oh and whilst we are mentioning things we like.. breakfast is high on the list!! Carrie does not need any of these preferences. The herd she lives with has 24/7 access to a large bedded, (deep, thus dark fly free) pen with hay as required - such as now because there is no quality in what little grass is left. She is well covered (being polite to her feelings) and def does not need a feed ... no matter how small! BUT Carrie has opinions and Carries owner wants her to enjoy her retirement. So here she is in her stable of choice :D

Onyx and Babe enjoy a table with a view. one of them... (No Names but with blonde highlights!) Likes to wee on the hay, so this works to put pay to that game. And it's very cute to watch them share so sweetly.

All stood in out of the sun and flies - lots of hay and daily showers offered. Each horse has their favorite place to stand and not all of them chose to have a shower. (Some like Carrie [grey] and Bob [chestnut] are def of the nope opinion. Whilst Poppy and Jim [ bays nearest camera] positively fight for first go. This is what we mean by a horse led system - in retirement years they get to have opinions in life..

Babe is going to be on the market soon (perhaps a bath first)
She is currently just turned 2yrs and I measured her today at 13.3hh.
Registered with UK Spanish horse soc. (pre Fusion).
Babe is a very sweet and people orientated character. She has a can do and relaxed attitude.

So recently we had a mystery
How had just two horses got through an entire field tub of lick in a week when a herd of six were still working on it? And why were they a big disgrace and covered from head to foot in lick?
The answer is in the video.. They have invented combat lick eating.. Bite huge lump of lick and then toss it at your opponent or smear them with it

Meanwhile...at the other end of the farm, this group are being numpties and have forgotten how to walk down the track to the shed. (In their defense it was fairly windy up on the top field)

We now have 3 spaces left for full retirement livery at £70/per horse per week. Located mid Devon uk.
We offer your horse: A natural, pastured based retirement, where daily, they can range freely over extended grazing areas. The Combination of mixed family herds, the varied habitations of grassland, orchards, woodland and bio-rich hedges offer mental stimulation and natural browsing opportunities. The horses at Solland are offered daily love and attention, (we soon learn their favourite scratch or rub) - whilst equally they are free to express individual personality and character traits. Your horse can choose if it wants to come in (and generally they are better than weather forecasting than the met office!) and then further, they can choose the accommodation style -- to buddy up in a open pen or take occupancy of a stable. In the worst weather months, we offer that bit extra to assist them in their senior years and again in the summer when it is hot or the flies are bad – they can choose to seek shelter in a pen or stable.
We believe that your horses mental health is just as important as their physical needs and we work hard to ensure that they remain relaxed and happy all their days here.
We understand that not being involved in the daily affairs of your loved horse is a sad and difficult decision – so we encourage owner visits and will send you pictures and regular updates.

Our livery services include-
• All year round tailored daily turnout
• Horses are stabled in their stable/barn every evening during winter months
And have free range access to shelter during hot / bad fly periods
• Twice daily health and welfare checks
• Horses are given daily attention and fuss.
• Rugs changed as necessary according to the weather conditions
• Each stable/barn has its own individual camera.
• Winter daily hard feed and adlib haylage with seasonal vitamin and mineral supplement in pasture / pens.

What is not included:
• Hoof trims
• Veterinary (or other specialist health care) attention
• Rug supply (we ask you to have two rugs here for use at all times)
• Worming treatments
