Local Food First CIC We want to improve access to affordable, healthy, nutritious food in Greater Manchester communities.

Local Food First CIC was formed in 2023 by Dave and Lina, who had been working together on Oldham Council’s Community Food Growing team. Local Food First CIC aims to improve the accessibility of affordable, healthy, and nutritious food for communities in Oldham and Greater Manchester. The main focus currently is Wildbrook Community Food & Growing Hub, where it is a partner organisation alongside Oldham Council Environmental Services. Local Food First currently operates a veg bag scheme in Fitton Hill and runs regular volunteering sessions at Wildbrook Growing Hub and training and nature education sessions. What a bee-autiful Saturday at Wildbrook Nature Club.

Our little nature explorers spent the day getting curious about the wonderful world of bees and bugs.

We learnt fascinating facts about bees, tasted different kinds of honey and discovered lots of little creatures along the way.

It was a lovely day full of learning, exploring, getting hands-on and enjoying nature together.

We can't wait for our next adventure!

πŸŽ‰πŸŒ± Celebrating New Beginnings at Wildbrook! πŸŒ±πŸŽ‰

In June we were delighted to celebrate the achievements of participants from our Roots to Work Programme with a very special Certificate Ceremony at Wildbrook.

Funded by Oldham Council and delivered with the support of Action Together and Get Oldham Working, the Economic Inactivity Trailblazer programme has helped local people build confidence, develop new skills and take positive steps towards volunteering, training and employment.

πŸ† Mel is one of our volunteer heroes. Thank you for your dedication and support. Thank you, First Choice Homes Oldham, for giving her the well-deserved recognition. πŸ’

πŸ† Volunteer Mel is our July Hidden Hero

πŸ‘ A huge congratulations to Mel Kershaw from Fitton Hill, who has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to Local Food First.

🌱 After joining the project a year ago, Mel has become a valued member of the team, helping to lead food growing sessions, support the Community Vegbag scheme and develop her horticultural skills through further training.

πŸ“© Nominated by Local Food First co-founder Dave Hanlon, Mel's journey shows the positive impact volunteering can have on wellbeing, confidence and community connections.

πŸ—£οΈMel said: "Volunteering has helped me when I was struggling after my mum passed as it got me out of the house, interacting with people and in nature and I encourage anyone to give it a go if they've got the time."

πŸ‘ Thank you Mel for making a difference in our community. You can read more about her story here: https://www.fcho.co.uk/news/volunteer-mel-is-our-july-hidden-hero/

🌿πŸ”₯ Our Outdoor Kitchen’s First Cook-Up! πŸ₯•πŸ₯’
What a fantastic day at Wildbrook β€” and what a milestone as we used our new outdoor kitchen for the very first time! πŸŽ‰
Our good friend Chef James from Open Kitchen Manchester, joined 25 of our Outdoor Explorers, parents and staff β€” 40 people altogether β€” for a brilliant morning of outdoor cooking, sunshine and fun! β˜€οΈ
Everyone got stuck in, chopping vegetables and making their own summer rolls using rice paper, fresh veggies and delicious sauce. There was plenty of chopping, chatting, tasting and laughter! πŸ₯•πŸ₯¬πŸŒΆοΈ
We also fired up the barbecue for the first time, roasting peppers and onions which James transformed into a delicious side dish of feta, roasted vegetables and pesto for everyone to enjoy with lunch. πŸ˜‹πŸ”₯
It was wonderful to see the outdoor kitchen finally come to life β€” bringing people together around food, learning new skills and having fun outdoors. ❀️
Huge thanks to project partners SPARK Oldham, Open Kitchen Manchester and Chef James, and our funders The National Lottery Community Fund and People’s Postcode Lottery for helping make this possible. πŸ™Œ
And a big well done to all our brilliant Outdoor Explorers! πŸŒ±πŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³
We can't wait to do it all again! πŸ”₯

Outdoor Explorers – What a fantastic first two weeks! 🐞🌳

We’ve had a brilliant start to our Outdoor Explorers sessions, delivered in collaboration with our friends SPARK Oldham! β˜€οΈ

Over the first two weeks, we’ve been getting stuck into all kinds of outdoor adventures β€” from bug hunting and pond dipping πŸ›πŸ’¦ to playing games, building dens and creating our very own wildlife wigwams. πŸŒΏπŸ•οΈ

And, of course, we couldn’t forget the Gruffalo Trail! 🐻🦊🐍 A firm favourite as we explored Wildbrook, followed the trail and kept our eyes peeled for signs of wildlife.

It’s been fantastic to see everyone getting outside, having fun, exploring nature and enjoying everything our green space has to offer. πŸ’š

And the adventure isn’t over yet… we’ve got another two weeks of summer fun to look forward to! 🌞🌿 We can’t wait to see what adventures are still waiting for us.

A huge thank you to the players of the Postcode Neighbourhood Lottery and The National Lottery for supporting these activities through grants for environmental and green activities. Your support is helping us give children and young people the opportunity to connect with nature, discover wildlife and enjoy the outdoors right here at Wildbrook. πŸ’š
