Butterlope Farm

Butterlope Farm Social Farming opportunities for adults with support needs and education visits for groups & schools.

Butterlope Farm is located 2 miles from the village of Plumbridge in the beautiful Glenelly Valley at the heart of the Sperrins. Owned and managed by Annie and Vincent they care for sheep, hens, calves and sheepdogs. As a Social Farm we provide an alternative to those in need of social care. Participants can join with farm, wildlife and gardening activities. Coming to Butterlope Farm gives partici

pants the opportunity to learn how to care for sheep and calves including feeding, lambing, herding, shearing, and caring for any ailments or problems they have. All activities are thoroughly risk managed and delivered at the participants pace. Other farming activities include feeding and caring for the poultry, collecting eggs, and helping to maintain the farm habitats and structures. This could range from dry stone walling to fencing and woodwork projects. A workshop allows the majority of items such as feeders, hen boxes, bird boxes and gates to be produced on the farm. The small kitchen garden, greenhouse and polytunnel provide opportunities for gardening activities such as vegetable and fruit growing. In addition, Butterlope Farm participants have the opportunity to enjoy and learn about the environment and the richness of our beautiful countryside. Participants may also have the opportunity to achieve LANTRA Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.

Always a pleasure to have the local Plum Club come to visit. This is their third visit through the Revealing Rural Heritage Project made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Northern Ireland
Thank to Lynne Smyth for sharing her skills and knowledge of working with raw wool. This project is drawing to a close, just a few schools and community groups left to visit but we have so enjoyed sharing the farm and natural heritage of the farm and Sperrins landscape.
