Here it goes...
Food that doesn’t taste right.
Because when food finishes early, it’s usually for the right reasons.
It hit. People went back for seconds. Then thirds. That one uncle who normally eats heavy? Back at the table again like “just a little more” 😅
That’s why it finished. You might hear a few “ahh the food’s done already” but that’s not really a complaint. That’s a compliment.
But when the food is there and it’s just not hitting?
You can feel it.
People are still eating but it’s quieter. Someone tries it and just nods. Another person doesn’t go back. Even that same uncle who usually clears plates? He has one and he’s done.
And with Afro-Caribbean food, you can’t get away with close enough. There’s a way it’s supposed to taste. When the seasoning’s right, you know. When the grill’s been handled properly, you know. And when it’s off, everyone knows.
That’s the part that sits with you as a host.
But it’s not just about flavour either. Even when the food tastes right, if it’s not planned properly you still feel it. Food finishing too early. People asking if there’s more. Now you’re in your head about it.
That’s why we don’t separate those two things.
The food tastes how it’s supposed to. And there’s enough of it for how people actually eat.
So you’re not thinking about either while your event’s going on.
