2026 SQUASH ROUNDUP
Last week, the team brought in this year’s squash. An intense job, this year has been (George thinks) record breaking with over 17 tonnes harvested. The size, on the whole, has been a bit smaller (the Crown Prince around 20% smaller than last year) but the numbers plentiful.
George has been keeping a close eye on how the different varieties fared and the it was the Uchiki Kuri that suffered most in the heat, with the Meteor and Celebration (yet again) performing the best. The squash store was already 2/3rds full last Thursday and with a tonne yet to harvest, George isn’t sure where he’s going to put it all!
Bear in mind, this harvest was direct sown in early April, irrigated only once to bed them in and then had no further watering. The plants then just put down roots and took what they could from our rich organic soil. We had three days of intense rain at the beginning of June and that was crucial for the success of the squash (and most things on the farm) but it just goes to show that without field scale irrigation, our organic soil can support veg in even the most challenging conditions.
