News flash!

George is featured on the BBC News website today and you may have spotted him on BBC Breakfast at around 8:30 this morning.

The subject the reporter wanted to cover was how the extreme temperatures this summer had affected farmers and in particular, how it could alter our Christmas dinner.

We discussed the plague of Flea Beetle that has hit so many growers this year and impacting heavily on brassica crops. George is still quite hopeful for our sprouts this year, although they may be a little smaller in size than normal.

He was also keen to point out that other crops (like squash and spuds) have done well, once again reaffirming that diversity of crops are CRUCIAL to seeing us through difficult times.

The first squash harvest is under way.

This week we’re delighted to be putting the delicious bright orange Uchiki Kuri in the box alongside a customer favourite, celebration squash. Both smaller in size, they are easy to prepare, versatile and will keep well in a cool dry place for a number of weeks.

While change is in the air weather wise, we’re not saying goodbye to summer favourites just yet and have PLENTY of tomatoes, cucumbers, French beans, basil, aubergines, courgettes and more.

Can you see the raindrops?! We need much, much more but we’re very glad of today’s downpour ☔️

While the squash are looking good as you can see, George is anticipating a bit of an Autumn ‘Hungry Gap’.

The broccoli and caulis and PSB survived the heat (just) but have failed to grow much in the way of harvestable veg. George isn’t sure if there is time for them to put on a growth spurt and recover and he’s unwilling to lift the nets to investigate in case the dreaded flea beetle spot an opportunity. Interestingly, the flea beetle have left the cabbages alone (not their favourite veg!) so at least we’ll have those in the Autumn.

George has also direct sown turnips, rocket, chard and spinach in the fields, tucked up tightly under a fleece to protect them. These were already on the rotation for this year but it looks like we’ll really be grateful for the extra Autumn veg.

In the meantime - more rain please!

Tizzy in the Tomatillos - perfect for salsa, find them in the shop today and tomorrow.

Tomatillos are a perfect little filler crop to sit in tight spaces next to polytunnels and inbetween bean cathedrals. They are a bit ‘niche’ and we don’t grow masses of them but we have several customers who look forward to them each year!

Just a fraction of today’s harvest 🍅🍆🥒🌶️

The amount of tomatoes we have is almost becoming an issue! The heritage beef toms are flourishing and we have a wide variety of cherry including little tasty plum toms which are impossible to not just pop in your mouth.

Loads and loads and loads in the shop (as you can see) including half price punnets which are perfect for saucing. Lots of big bags basil to go with them.

So where are we?

Well, some things have loved the heat and are still thriving: summer veg like aubergines, tomatoes, onions and flat beans are (with diligent watering by the team) in their element. The autumn leeks are also looking fantastic and the carrots have been great.

Some crops are looking OK to average: potatoes are ticking along, the squash appears to be happy (as you can see) although I am slightly concerned about the final size of the fruit due to lack of moisture.... The Brussel Sprouts and Kalettes (our Christmas and January staples) are looking average but frankly, we are very grateful the little plants have not perished.

Some things have really struggled: Chard, Spinach, Kale, Lettuce (any leaf really) have not enjoyed the high temperatures and relative lack of water, and the Flea Beetle has proved a huge challenge to growers all across the country as it too seeks moisture and decimates whole fields of leaves. The Autumn Cauliflower and Broccoli are also not looking good.

It’s times like these that remind us why diversity of crops are SO crucial to ongoing success - if one crop or several fail, in all likelihood another few will have enjoyed the conditions and thrived. I am also aware that if we had a supermarket contract or were selling wholesale veg, we would be very vulnerable right now. Selling direct to our customers means we can always offer the best from our fields and fill the boxes with fresh veg.

So yes, it is a struggle to get things growing at the moment and to make ends meet, but we’re still here, still harvesting lots of great organic veg and we’re VERY grateful for our customer’s support.

Lots of customers have kindly been asking about the weather and how we are coping.

In short: it’s tiring, it’s challenging but we are doing ok.

Yes, there have been some losses due to lack of water and the heat but as an organic farm without irrigation, losses are part of the norm for us and George factors a % of loss into each growing year.

The negatives:

The leaves (lettuce, chard, spinach) are currently not regrowing as fast as we’d like (just too hot). George is also not sure the vast tendrils and masses of leaves in the squash fields are going to equate to large veg overall (not enough moisture) and there is a question mark over whether the autumn cauliflowers and broccoli will ‘flower before they fruit’ so to speak.

The positives:

The baby winter brassicas (kalettes, sprouts etc) are still looking good, the team are doing sterling work watering non stop and the summer staples (tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes, peppers) are doing really well. The autumn leeks are also looking fantastic and the onions have been amazing.

AND all the heat and lack of moisture means it’s quite easy to keep on top of the weeds.

So, overall, on balance, for the time being, we are doing ok. There is plenty to fill the veg boxes and lots in the shop to enjoy.

Long term is a scarier prospect and we really do VERY much need rain…..🌧️🤞
