We were saddened to read that another great distillery and Scottish Gin producer is calling time on its distillery business.

We first visited The Secret Garden Distillery, formerly the Old Curiosity Distillery, in June 2018. During that visit, founder Hamish Martin introduced us to the gardens, the gin and the ethos behind the business.

Over the following eight years, we watched the business grow, develop and change ownership, with the brand continuing to evolve under the stewardship of the Armstrong family.

We returned in August 2022 to learn more about the distillery’s expansion, including the work being done to grow more botanicals on-site, such as juniper. It was also wonderful to hear how the original ethos established by Hamish continued under the guidance of Imogen, Isobel and Kate.

We loved the new packaging, the way the existing Scottish Gins were refined and developed, and the introduction of an exciting range of new releases.

We would like to thank everyone, past and present, who welcomed us to the distillery and gardens over the years and supported The Gin Cooperative, International Scottish Gin Day, The Gin Cooperative Awards and our shop, ScottishGin.com.

We wish the entire team all the very best for the future.

Something new but old from The Orkney Distillery - Kirkjuvagr Barrel Aged Navy Strength Gin. Bottled at 59% ABV, a nod to the distillery location at 59 degrees North, Navy Strength Kirkjuvagr Gin has been aged for 5 years in ruby port and bourbon casks, before being carefully blended and bottled to create a unique, high strength Scottish Gin.

We are delighted to introduce our newest release that combines tradition with Orcadian craftsmanship.

Navy Strength gin traces its roots to the 18th-century British Royal Navy, where spirits were tested by mixing them with gunpowder. If the mixture ignited, the gin was deemed “proof” strength – at least 57% ABV. Our Barrel Aged Navy Strength Gin pays tribute to this tradition while adding a distinctive character of its own.

Bottled at 59% ABV, a nod to our location at 59° North, this gin has been matured for five years in ruby port and bourbon casks before being expertly blended. The result is a full-bodied spirit that is remarkably smooth.

Vibrant juniper and pine are complemented by notes of dried fruit and toasted oak. Subtle smokiness adds depth, while the long, warming finish lingers with hints of liquorice and sweet spice.

There’s something quietly compelling about being invited behind the scenes of a distillery, to see not just the finished spirit in the glass, but the people, decisions and craft that shape it.

That’s exactly what Tayport Distilleryare now offering with the launch of their dedicated YouTube channel. Through a series of videos, they’re opening the doors to their distillery, sharing the story of the people behind the business, and giving a closer look at the processes that define their spirits.

What makes their story particularly distinctive is Tayport Distillery are among the very few distilleries in Scotland who produce their own base alcohol for their Scottish Gin from scratch, a time-intensive and technically demanding approach.
