Did you know that in two days time on 12th August Cornwall will experience a partial solar eclipse where up to 96% of the sun is obscured by the moon, and it will be the deepest partial solar eclipse visible from the UK since 1999? The partial eclipse will run from 6:18 pm to 8:09 pm, with maximum coverage, (around 95.8% at Land's End), occurring at 7:15 pm just before sunset. Because the sun is never fully covered during a partial eclipse, experts advise that it remains incredibly dangerous to look at the sun directly. Regular sunglasses, polaroid filters, cameras, binoculars or telescopes without proper solar filters will not protect your eyes. So please do be careful.

Bumblebees are vital pollinators, helping sustain wildflowers and some of the crops we rely on and, with news that UK bumblebees could suffer sharp falls in their numbers as heatwaves become more frequent, the team at Martha’s Orchard wish to do everything they can in the Orchard’s gardens to help the bee population. You can help too at home or at work, by simply creating more flower-rich habitats, so bumblebees can find food even as the climate becomes more extreme. Even a pot of native wildflowers on a doorstep or windowsill can act as a small refuelling stop for insects. The attached BBC News article explains why UK furry bees are not as well equipped for the extreme heat and what we can all do to help…

The furry bodies of UK bumblebees are specially adapted for cold weather - making heatwaves a struggle.
