On the move

Moving day for the sucklers. These were first cows out this year are now onto their second field.

As well as the dairy herd, we also run a herd of pedigree Simmental sucklers of which these guys are a member. The term “suckler” means that the calves are able to stay with their mums until they’re weened at 8-10 months old. Whereas our dairy cows are only with their calves for a week…though we are taking notes from The Ethical Dairy.

When these calves are fully grown we will look to either sell them as breeding stock or breed off them ourselves to continue the Lyvennet Simmentals line.

Our own organic Yoghurt and Skyr can now be ordered online through www.lyvennetorganic.co.uk. We can deliver items directly to you or they can be collected from Kings Meaburn if you're in the local area too.

Our Yoghurt & Skyr is now ONLINE at www.lyvennetorganic.co.uk

Yep, it doesn’t look like much…but it’s a big step forward for us.

We can deliver nationwide (sorry it’s a little pricey still), or you can collect from us here in King’s Meaburn.

P.S. If you find anything that’s broken, just drop us a message on Instagram and we’ll do our best to resolve it.

The Easter weekend featured lots of seed bed prep for our incoming organic spring crops. We plough most of our arable ground, before harrowing, sowing and rolling to establish an even seedbed. This does release a lot of carbon, and is becoming a rarity in some parts of the industry with direct drilling being quicker and more beneficial in many cases. However, ploughs are integral to many organic systems which rely on this ancient approach to manage weeds (a constant challenge without herbicides) and reduce compaction, which can become a problem when taking multiple cuts of silage each year. We do however try to improve soil health to offset this by regularly rotating perennial grasses with peas, barley and oats and of course avoiding chemical inputs.

We're trying something a little different. Lyvennet Organic. This is our own brand, which is going to focus on on farm production of organic Yoghurt and Skyr. All of which are made using the fabulous milk from our own Montbeliard herd. All our products are also packaged in returnable, reusable and recyclable glass jars to make sure we help contribute to reducing waste.

After a few months of trial and error we have just made our first deliveries to two great local partners in Cranstons Butcher + Maker in Penrith and Low Howgill Butchers & Deli in Appleby. We are also going to be selling direct through our website, www.lyvennetorganic.co.uk.

Please do get along to our partners to get hold of these first samples, or alternatively drop us a message and we can prepare some for delivery if you're in the local area. Thank you in advance for your support.

And they’re off!

Two very tired fledgling business creators off to drop our yoghurt and skyr with two exciting Cumbrian customers - Cranstons Butcher + Makerand Low Howgill Butchers & Deli
Thanks to both for the support and let’s see how this thing goes 🤞🤞.

Who’d have thought working full time jobs, part-time farming, setting up a business (…make that TWO for Rachel Addison) and attempting a social life would be so tiring 🤷🏼‍♂️?
