We were blessed to have Leisa from De Stadsgroenteboer in Amsterdam joined us for the week.
In our busy lives it is extremely rare to spend a week with another grower. Turned out to be a really productive and inspiring time. There is always so much to learn.
The extra help at this very busy time was great.
We transformed a wild tomato tunnel into tidy beds of winter salads.
Our method of flipping the beds is to mow everything (crop and cover crop) spray biostimulants on the mowings, hoe, then mow again with the little mower. This mixes soil and clippings for faster breakdown.
Then we spread a little woodchip compost, marked, and planted.
We are a bit behind otherwise I would like to of Broad forked and put inoculants down the holes.
Tomatoes still cropping so well we left the round toms as least likely to split more we need to water.
This autumn continues to be extraordinarily sunny and warm, tomato plants that struggled to set fruit in the summer heat are making up for it now.

Checking out what’s been happening below ground this summer. Good to see aggregation is developing deeper into the soil profile, and wow what a lot of white fungal hypae. Any piece of Woodchip in the soil is covered in white hypae, larger strands meandering through the soil and around plant roots.
Dark carbon mottling throughout and the colour gradient between lighter sun soil and darker top soil is gradual.
This is an improvement on previous years. Undersowing, soil inoculants, flachenrotte seem to be paying off.
Oh and the delicious intoxicating earthy smell some seem to find irresistible😂😂

Seed to Plate and screening of The Last Harvest at OmVed London
Honoured to be asked to couple with the incredible chef 김송수 | songsoo kim and supply produce grown from home saved seed.
The film is a surprisingly beautiful uplifting story of Dr Debal Deb and his work to save 1000+ rice varieties in India.
The meal a chance to connect agroecological growers with chefs to explore how we can work together.
SongSoo turned our humble squash and peppers into a delicious course. Managing to preserve the different flavours and textures of the squash and turn the peppers into pickled sweet flavoursome treats to go with a wonderful spicy curry.
Mildly terrifying standing up and sharing our seed saving story of these crops.

Glorious day harvesting the squash. We have two diverse squash flocks. Our Hubbard flock and a moshata butternut flock.
Despite the dry summer and w**d they have done quite well. Spotting them amongst the w**d was challenging, Molly on guard for mice and voles.
We were left wondering why the fruit is often in clusters as if the plants grow towards the same area, or just like hanging out together 🙂
Stacked in the tunnel to cure most of these should store throughout the winter and be enjoyed by our veg box customers for the months to come.
Many of our original Hubbard varieties came from The Real Seed Catalogue over the past few years there has been plenty of cross pollination, we now have a great variety of colour, shape, flavour, and size.

Blink and you will miss them. Swallows that built a nest in our porch, frantically feeding their young in time for the big migration.
Hornets built a nest under the wooden boards above the bay windows. I’ve loved watching these gentle giants go about their business.
Team Oxton’s is feeling blessed for many reasons. Cherishing life and full of joy and admiration for the farm that turned green this week.
Sun, warmth and rain what a wonderful start to autumn.

Pasture suffered so badly in the drought and heat, so I have decided to over seed a couple of acres. If it works well I will wish I’d done more.
Hopefully it will germinate fast with the soil so damp and warm.
Some areas are greening up, resisting putting the sheep on to give the plants time to recover, yet where to graze them in the meantime.
