January at Priory Apiary.
I’m often asked if bees hibernate. Well, contrary to popular believe honeybees don’t hibernate. During the colder months they are less active and mostly stay in the hive except for the occasional cleansing flight.
In the hive they cluster together for warmth. Worker bees form a tight cluster around the queen bee and by shivering their muscles, the bees collectively generate heat, keeping the cluster temperature at around 35°C, even when its freezing outside.
In January early spring flowers can provide a welcome food source. The first snow drops have appeared at Priory Apiary and the warm days last week brought the bees out.
