The Yellow Hive Sharing my journey into beekeeping, from starting with my first hive to producing my own honey.

Yesterday, we went to the Huntingdonshire Beekeepers Association’s Honey Show along with Backyard Honey where they had a variety of honeys produced by local beekeepers to taste. There was also the opportunity to look under the microscope and inspect the pollen collected from Ivy. This is what the bees are collecting now to store and convert to honey for winter.

I also managed to get a hold of a new beehive tool and a beekeeper’s jacket. 🐝

One of many healthy frames. This is one of the centre frames with plenty of capped brood. The winter bees will start coming through in the next several days. These bees will keep the colony alive throughout winter.

Quick maintenance check at the hive! 🛡️ Refilling the feeder and getting the wasp guard in place. No need to open them up, just making sure they're protected and well-fed.

Hive No. 1 🐝🍯

A little visit to check on the bees today, and finally got around to putting a number on my first hive.

No. 1 — the first of many hopefully! 🥹🐝

It’s crazy to think this is just the beginning of our beekeeping journey. Lots still to learn, but I’m absolutely loving it so far. Here’s hoping we’ll be adding plenty more numbers over the years! 🍯🌻🐝

🐝 Back out with our bees today

Nothing too exciting today, but a few important jobs done.

I took out the inspection tray and had a quick count of the Varroa mites, then gave the tray a clean and put it back in.

I also removed the Apiguard treatment from the brood box now that the treatment is finished.

Finally, I gave the bees their first feed. I’ll be feeding them over the next few weeks to help them build up their stores ready for winter.

Still learning as I go, but it’s good to start getting into a bit of a routine with our hive.

🐝 Welcome to The Yellow Hive!

After wanting to give beekeeping a go for a long time, I finally took the plunge this year and got my first hive.

I’m completely new to this, so there’s a lot to learn and I’m sure plenty of mistakes will be made along the way but I’m really enjoying the journey so far.

I’ve created The Yellow Hive to share that journey. The bees, the hive inspections, what I learn along the way, the challenges, and hopefully eventually the honey.

For now, it’s just one yellow hive and a lot of enthusiasm. Let’s see where it takes me.
