We were out again today, looking for a hornets nest, following a report on a group page that people were being stung in the area of woodland along the bottom of Stoggy Lane, Plympton ๐๐๐
We found the hornets in a tree hollow, where we spent some time in front of the nest observing them ๐๐
They are ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐, and if left alone to do what they do, they will provide a beneficial service to nature, by controlling the insect population, as they are very good predators ๐
They also defend their nest very well, and will attack in great numbers, if they feel threatened or suspicious of anything passing near the nest ๐
They don't discriminate between adults, children, or pets, and if they attack you as you're running away, and you fall and suffer an injury, only somebody in protective clothing will be able to help you out, as ambulance staff won't risk approaching you covered in hornets ๐๐
Please be aware, share this, and tell your own children to not be tempted to tease a nest of hornets! ๐
Typically, there will be around 300 - 400 hornets in a nest, but a hollow tree can hold upto 1,000 hornets, depending on the strength of the parent, colony, location, and cavity size ๐๐
