An evening stroll to check the youngsters.
If you catch them before they see you then life is so much easier. Otherwise trying to do a headcount with everyone on top of you is not easy. Think primary school children on a school trip!!
These are a mixture of heifers who will have their first calves this autumn and youngsters who are still growing.

The joys of keeping sheep!!!
John is currently on tractor work bringing the bales back to the yard.
In his elevated position he can scan the sheep field over the hedge. A phone call later and I am dispatched to check on an ewe/lamb in the furthest corner that hasn't moved.
Thankfully it's a fleece that has caught on a bramble and all sheep are fine.
During lambing some ewes like humans have more difficulties and require treatment. The stress during that time can cause the ewe to shed their wool in the following weeks much faster than the rest of the flock.
Sheep keeping is definitely challenging and it's always better to think the worse and then be relieved by a better outcome.
The red on the wool is the spray marker of her lambing number.
I will put the wool to good use in the garden as a slug deterrent.

It did rain a little overnight but on the brightside there is an excellent crop and far more silage than last year.
The contractors are busy collecting but I don't think it will all fit into storage so we will have to bale some of the crop into round bales. Good news as the faster we can replenish the food stock the more fields we can free up for cattle grazing.

Fingers crossed for no overnight rain!!!The smell of fresh grass is divine!!!!
