The First Venison Jianbing Shop on the Isle of Skye — It’s Mine!
“Venison in a jianbing? Really?”
Yes! I’ve wrapped together the flavors of my homeland and a faraway land into one pancake.
Last year, I moved to the Isle of Skye, determined to create something different —
to bring local flavors into a familiar street snack.
So, I chose jianbing guozi — the taste of my hometown.
Jianbing carries the memory of home; venison belongs to the Scottish Highlands.
Combine them, and you get both the comforting warmth of street food and the wild essence of Skye.
Once the idea struck, I just went for it.
But creating an original dish is like walking into uncharted territory.
If it doesn’t work, people might say,
“Why not just stick a sausage in it?”
The venison mustn’t be gamey or tough.
The jianbing must be crispy.
And the sauce — authentic, full of soul.
After dozens of trials and tweaks,
I finally made the very first venison jianbing guozi on the Isle of Skye.
Fortunately, my customers loved it.
Now I stand by the sea,
feeling the ocean breeze,
watching the grass and waves sway together,
listening to the seagulls’ cries,
and eating my own venison jianbing —
a taste of home wrapped in the flavor of a foreign land.
I’m in Portree, Isle of Skye.
If you pass by, stop for a chat —
we can talk about the island’s beauty and the changes back home. 😏
