National Asparagus Day

Asparagus has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years, originally in the eastern Mediterranean region. Its name comes from the Greek word “asparagos,” meaning “to spring up.”

It belongs to the lily family, alongside vegetables like onions, garlic, and leeks. Asparagus is packed with nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as fibre, folate, and chromium.

It also contains the amino acid asparagine, which acts as a natural diuretic. Low in calories, around 20 per serving, asparagus is a great option for those watching their weight. In addition, it’s rich in antioxidants like glutathione, which help protect the body’s cells from damage.
