SAVE THE DATE – 18th October

We’re planning a bit of a fundraiser here at Dora’s Dairy on Sunday 18th October.

There’ll be plenty going on, a chance to support us through what’s been a pretty tough year on the farm, and of course an opportunity to sample some of our finest pig wares with a proper pig roast.

And that’s it. The cows are now eating the last bit of grass we have left.

At this time of year, there should still be plenty of grass ahead of them. Instead, after months of desperately little rain, we’ve reached the end.

We’ve stretched what we had as far as we possibly could, but from here we’re going to have to rely much more heavily on bought-in feed ,while also trying to protect the winter forage we’ve managed to make.

I know I’ve posted a lot about the drought recently, but I think it’s important to show what it actually looks like on the ground.

This is what farming through a drought looks like at Dora’s Dairy.

And now we really, really need some rain.

Yesterday I showed you just how little grass we have left.

This is what’s happening underneath it.

The ground is so dry that some of these cracks are around a foot deep — I can put my whole hand down into them.

It really puts into perspective just how desperately dry the land is now.

We need rain. And we need quite a lot of it.

The reality of farming through this drought.

This is the second little update from the fields. What should be lush, green grass at this time of year is simply disappearing, and the cracks in the ground show just how desperately dry it is.

We’re already feeding forage that should have been saved for winter, while the lack of growth means we haven’t been able to make the winter feed we normally would either.

The cows are feeling it, milk production is down, and every dry day adds a little more pressure.

We really, really need some rain now. 🌧️

A little milk update from us

Unfortunately, our girls have had a bit of a drop in their milk yield recently, so we’ve had to make the decision that from today, we’ll be closed for MILK SALES ONLY on Mondays.

The Shack will still be open as usual, so please do still pop by!

We’ll still have plenty of our other goodies available, including fresh eggs, honey from our very own bees, our grass-fed beef, free-range pork and, of course, our delicious ice cream.

It’s just the milk that’s having a little Monday rest!

Thank you, as always, for supporting us and our little farm — we really do appreciate every single one of you.

Milk will be back on sale as normal from Tuesday.

We talk a lot about the weather in farming, but this year it’s becoming something much more serious.

The lack of rain is now having a very real impact on the land, the grass and the food we’re trying to produce.
