🐝 A successful official inspection at HiveHaus

We are pleased to share that our apiary recently received a visit from a Seasonal Bee Inspector and the inspection was a great success. Our colonies were found to be strong, healthy and developing well, a proud reflection of the care and attention we give our bees throughout the season.

Seasonal Bee Inspectors are experienced beekeepers working as part of the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s National Bee Unit. APHA is sponsored by Defra, as well as the Welsh and Scottish Governments. Here in Wales, the National Bee Unit supports the Welsh Government’s statutory bee-health programme. Their important work includes inspecting colonies for notifiable pests and diseases, responding to suspected outbreaks, taking samples when required and offering practical bee-health advice to beekeepers.

The service is supported by BeeBase, the National Bee Unit’s online database and information resource. BeeBase helps inspectors monitor disease incidents, contact nearby registered beekeepers when risks are identified and arrange free statutory inspections where necessary.

We are grateful for the knowledge, reassurance and valuable service provided by our Seasonal Bee Inspector. Healthy bees and responsible beekeeping will always remain at the heart of HiveHaus.

🐝 A glimpse inside our thriving hives 🐝

Over the next 12 days, approximately 1,500 new worker bees will emerge from this single frame of brood. Each capped cell contains a developing bee. A wonderful sign of a strong queen and a healthy, growing hive.

At HiveHaus, we work in close harmony with the natural rhythm of our bees, always placing colony health and bee welfare first.

🐝 Mated Queen Bees from HiveHaus 🐝

These small boxes may not look like much, but they are essential to rearing new queen bees. They are our mini mating hives, used to support young queens while they complete their mating flights and establish a reliable laying pattern.

HiveHaus will have a limited number of 2026 mated queen bees, which we will be using to expand our apiary to:

✅ Requeen a queenless colony
✅ Replace an ageing or underperforming queen bees
✅ Improve the temperament of a difficult colony
✅ Introduce a queen into a properly prepared nucleus colony

Did you know that a queen bee (female bee) usually mates with several drones (male bees) during one or more mating flights? She stores the s***m in a special organ called the s***matheca and can use it to fertilise eggs for the rest of her life.

That means a few short flights early in her life can influence the genetics, temperament and productivity of the whole colony for years.

Our gentle Buckfast strain is known for its strong foraging, disease resistance and calm temperament; making them excellent for modern hives.

The picture shows “Bearding” which is actually a great sign of a thriving, populous colony with plenty of bees doing their job to keep the hive comfortable. By reducing the number of bees inside the hive and blowing/fanning the hot air out. It’s smart temperature control!

🐝 Meet one of the newest members of Hive Haus 👑
This is a Buckfast Queen Bee just a few hours old after emerging.
At this stage, she hadn’t left the hive and is still soft, light in colour and finding her feet while the worker bees provided care for her.
Over the next few days she’ll strengthen, mature, and eventually head out on mating flights (sunny day) before returning to hopefully become the heart of a thriving colony 🐝

What always amazes me is that every single bee in the hive, thousands of them, depends on one queen. No pressure then 😂

Have you ever seen a queen bee up close before? 👇

🐝 Did you know bees don’t just collect pollen by accident?

Pollen is actually the colony’s main source of protein and is essential for feeding developing brood (baby bees) inside the hive 🐝

The different pollen colours you can see here come from different plants flowering in the local area, which means beekeepers can often get a rough idea of what the bees are foraging on just by watching them return home. A healthy variety of pollen sources is really important for a strong, healthy colony, which is why diverse wildflowers and gardens matter so much for pollinators 🌼

🐝 One of the most interesting parts of beekeeping is being able to work out where the bees have been foraging just from the pollen they bring back. Using a pollen chart like this, we can roughly match the colours to what’s flowering locally at the moment.

Right now, these bright yellow and orange pollen loads are most likely coming from things like:

🌼 Dandelions
🌳 Willow
🌸 Fruit blossom (apple/plum/cherry)
💛 Oilseed r**e
🌿 Hawthorn

This is completely normal for this time of year. Spring is when colonies rapidly expand, brood rearing increases and bees start making the most of all the fresh pollen and nectar sources suddenly appearing around them. Every tiny pollen load you see here is packed with protein and helps feed the next generation of bees inside the hive 🐝

What flowers have you noticed the bees loving near you lately? 👇

There’s something a bit magical about getting this close. From perfectly built honeycomb to a gentle little visitor landing on my hand; this is where it all begins. 🐝✨

- Not in a supermarket.
- Not in a jar.
- But here inside the hive.

At Hive Haus, this is what we’re all about… Slow, natural, intentional processes that respect how things are meant to be.

Because real food has a story!

Would you be brave enough to let a bee land on you? 👇
