When I first started creating cakes, I kept most of them on display in what we called the cake room. My sister used to joke that, once we had all gone to bed, she imagined the cakes coming to life and chatting amongst themselves. We would laugh and wonder what they might say.
Perhaps they would tell funny stories about how long they had taken to create. Perhaps, in those early days, they would quietly speak of the sadness I had poured into them, and how creating them became a way of making sense of feelings I couldn’t always put into words.
These days, I don’t make as many cakes simply for the joy of creating as I once did, and I rarely keep them on display. But if I did somehow get to keep all the cakes we’ve had the privilege of creating for our clients over the years, I imagine their conversations would be similar, yet a little different. They would speak of the heartfelt stories of the people they were created for, the meaning woven into each detail, and how proud they were to carry those stories through their form.
I imagine the sugar flowers having a little dance, joyfully reflecting on their counterparts in nature, each one celebrating the beauty that inspired it.
