π― A very special milestone for St Joans Farm... our own honey is finally here! π―
After more than 12 months of hard work from our bees and our in-house beekeeper, Richard, we're incredibly proud to announce that St Joans Farm Honey will be available to purchase from this Saturday.
Living in our "Beehive Field" is home to 7 hives and approximately 350,000 honey bees. These amazing little workers have spent the last year collecting nectar, pollinating the local countryside and producing the honey that is now ready for you to enjoy.
π Did you know it takes the lifetime work of around 16 bees to produce just one teaspoon of honey?
π Another fascinating fact is that the bees depend on their stored honey to survive the winter. Responsible beekeepers don't harvest honey during winter, as the colony relies on these precious reserves to keep warm and fed through the colder months.
π And when it comes to the hive, it's the female worker bees that do almost all the hard work - collecting nectar and pollen, caring for the young, building the honeycomb and maintaining the hive. The male bees, known as drones, have one main purpose: to mate with a queen. Those that mate die shortly afterwards, while the remaining drones are usually evicted from the hive before winter so the colony can conserve its food stores.
For us, this is about much more than just honey.
At St Joans Farm, we're passionate about farming in a way that works alongside nature. Our bees play a vital role in pollinating wildflowers, hedgerows and crops, helping to support biodiversity across the farm and beyond.
Producing our own honey is a huge milestone for St Joans Farm and another step in our journey towards more regenerative and sustainable farming practices. To be able to offer honey produced by our own bees, from our own Beehive Field, right here on the farm, is something we're incredibly proud of.
Special thanks to Gerry and Reigate bee keepers association for their support and advice.
