Happy National Chianti Day! 🇮🇹

Today we’re celebrating one of Italy’s great w**e styles — and one that needs very little introduction at Basil’s.

Chianti Classico comes from the historic heartland of Chianti, between Florence and Siena, where Sangiovese reigns supreme. Expect bright cherry and red berry fruit, savoury herbs, refreshing acidity and those wonderfully earthy, sometimes leathery notes that make it such a brilliant food w**e.

Our bottle today is Castello della Paneretta Chianti Classico - made on a historic estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, with Sangiovese at its core and all the freshness, structure and savoury character you want from a proper Tuscan red.

It’s the sort of w**e that doesn’t need much fuss. Pour it, grab some food and let Tuscany do the talking. 🍷

🍇 Happy International Cabernet Sauvignon Day!

One of the world’s most powerful and age-worthy red grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon is celebrated for its deep blackcurrant character, structured tannins and remarkable ability to develop with time. It’s the benchmark for red w**e excellence and sophistication - and, unsurprisingly, a pretty brilliant match for a good chunk of cheese, particularly those aged and savoury enough to stand up to its intensity. 🧀

To celebrate, we’re pouring Château Le Coteau Margaux Margaux on special this weekend. From a family-owned estate in the heart of Margaux, one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations, this is a w**e dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and a beautiful expression of the elegance and finesse the region is known for.

Think vibrant dark fruit, refined tannins, with subtle floral and earthy undertones — sophisticated without being showy, and very much a w**e to take your time over.

Join us for a gloriously unserious evening of w**e and crisps, as we put six interesting w**es from our cellar to the ultimate snack test. From Salt & Vinegar Discos to Quavers, we’re exploring some surprisingly brilliant pairings.

There’s a little bit of everything in the w**e line-up too: sparkling, aromatic whites, a bit of red, and an orange w**e. Each w**e has been carefully matched with its crisp soulmate - although whether they actually belong together is for you to decide.

Expect plenty of w**e, plenty of crisps and a relaxed, informal tasting where there are no wrong answers.

A little milestone for Basil’s 🍷🇭🇷

Today we welcome the first Croatian w**es onto our list - meaning we now stock w**es from 16 European countries.

Having had them visit us last month, we are now introducing two bottles from Cota W**ery on the Dalmatian coast:

Oklai Orange 🧡
A beautifully textured orange w**e made from a blend of indigenous Croatian varieties, with notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus peel, herbs and a gentle savoury finish.

Pero J’Dero ❤️
A characterful red with plenty of personality - ripe dark fruit, spice and earthy notes balanced with freshness and finesse.

We love discovering w**es from places that might not always get the spotlight, and bringing them and their stories to the bar.

We may be best known for w**e, but we’re certainly not just about w**e.

We’re also big believers in championing brilliant local producers so our b**r fridge is home to carefully chosen bottles, and when they’re as good as this, they deserve their moment too.

Fresh from winning Silver in the hotly contested Regional Cask category at the recent Society of Independent Brewers Awards, Leveson Buck from Titsey Brewing Co., on the Surrey/Kent border, is proof that session b**r doesn’t have to compromise on character.

Expect vibrant passionfruit notes, a satisfyingly crisp bitterness and plenty of flavour packed into an easy-drinking 3.7%.

Complex enough to keep b**r lovers interested, endlessly sessionable, and brilliant alongside bold, richly flavoured food. 🍺

Wednesday means one thing… a new week begins at Basil’s!

And with the mercury nudging the mid-30s once again, you can rest assured our new air conditioning is set to on! The room is cool, the rosé is chilled… and, because we’re fully embracing this long summer, so are a couple of our reds.

🍷 Aleksander Zavec Blaufränkisch – peppery, vibrant, effortlessly refreshing.

🍷 Mas de la Sabatera “Turnalls Avall” Pinot Noir – silky, bright, summer-fruited.

Chilled reds are all the rage for good reason. Light, energetic, ridiculously drinkable and every bit at home in this warm weather.
