Happy Birthday Gower! On 9 May 2026 we celebrate 70 years since the Gower Peninsular was designated the very first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in the UK. The first of many but arguably still the best!
Where else can you find award-winning beaches like Rhossili, salt marshes, dramatic limestone cliffs and 70 square miles of diverse natural scenery? A rich history, featuring sites like Arthur’s Stone, Paviland Cave (where the “Red Lady” was found) and ancient castles and churches. More recently, it has been recognised as South Wales’ first International Dark Sky Community.
The Gower Society has been working to preserve the landscape, nature and history since 1947 – well before others decided it was so special. We aim to raise awareness and safeguard the landscape and work sustainably to support the environment. There’s a great programme of guided walks, activities for families, talks and events - all for a membership fee of just £20 a year!
If you care about Gower as we do, join us today in singing Happy Birthday and sign up to the Gower Society to help preserve this wonderful corner of Wales.
