Liver Fluke: Know The Risk This Autumn

A dry summer does not necessarily mean there is no liver fluke risk. Streams, ponds, springs, ditches and natural drinking points can remain damp enough for the mud snail involved in the fluke lifecycle to thrive.
This autumn:
✅ Assess where livestock have grazed and drunk
✅ Consider farm and field-specific risk
✅ Use testing where appropriate
✅ Choose the right treatment for the stage of infection
✅ Avoid unnecessary or repeated treatment

Don't assume a dry summer means no fluke.
Assess where your livestock have grazed and drunk, test where appropriate, and use the right treatment at the right time.

Winter Housing: Small Checks Make A Big Difference

As cattle come indoors for winter, a few simple checks can help maintain health, comfort and performance.
Before housing, review:
✅ Ventilation and airflow, without draughts at animal level
✅ Clean, dry and comfortable bedding
✅ Drainage in yards and cubicles
✅ Trough space and water flow rates
✅ Daily access to clean, fresh drinking water
Taking time to prepare now can help prevent problems later in the winter.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Gisburn Auction Mart for a morning of great discussions, breakfast and valuable insights into calf health, nutrition and performance.

A special thank you to Alexandra Reid and Jordan Tipping from Cargill, alongside Peter McGill, for sharing their knowledge and expertise on preparing calves for winter, critical temperatures, energy requirements, feeding, environment and growth.

It was fantastic to see such a great turnout and bring farmers together to share ideas and learn from one another.
