🦙💛 Please say hello to… DOLLY! 💛🦙

Last Monday, 24th August, we welcomed the long-awaited arrival of the newest member of the Wellgate family!

Peanut the Alpaca finally “unpacked” her beautiful little blonde female cria, and, of course, the very first question was… what shall we name her? 🥰

Then, the very next day, the world was saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. Stories of her incredible kindness, generosity and love spread across the globe, reminding us once again what a truly special person she was.

So, there really could be no other name for our beautiful little blonde cria.

We would like to honour the world’s most lovable blonde by naming our newest arrival after her.

🌸 So please say a very warm Wellgate welcome to… Dolly! 🌸

You may have noticed certain parts of the farm are currently out of bounds- this is so that mum and baby can focus on bonding, and making sure that peanut, honey and fudge are little dolly’s most important companion’s!🦙 We ask you to please respect these boundaries during these first few months, we know how exciting it is, but it’s incredibly important for the development of dolly to learn appropriate alpaca behaviour💝.

We hope our little Dolly grows up to bring as much joy, love and happiness to everyone she meets as her namesake has brought to the world.

A Fresh Start for Our Hens 🐔❤️

Every year, millions of commercial laying hens reach the end of their productive life at around 72 weeks. Fresh Start for Hens estimates that around 40 million hens in the UK face slaughter at this age—not because they are sick, but because their egg production naturally begins to decline.

These beautiful, sociable girls deserve so much more. ❤️

Thanks to Fresh Start for Hens, these girls have been given a second chance—and Wellgate Community Farm is delighted to have given them their forever home. 🏡🐔

After life in commercial production, some arrived looking very different from the healthy, confident hens they are becoming. With space to roam, scratch, dust-bathe and explore, they can finally enjoy life at their own pace.

We are giving them plenty of TLC, nutritious food, fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs and carefully supplemented feed to support their condition. We’re already looking forward to seeing their feathers grow back and watching their personalities shine through. 🌿🥕🍎

They may have been considered “spent” by the industry—but we think they are just getting started! 🐔❤️

A huge thank you to Fresh Start for Hens for rescuing these girls and giving them the chance of a fresh start. Together, we can give these wonderful hens the retirement they deserve. 🐔🌱

🌱🐑 YOUNG FARMERS MINI GAMES! 🏆

Come along this weekend and cheer on our Young Farmers as they take on a series of fun, competitive animal showings! 👩‍🌾💪

Watch them put their knowledge, practical skills and teamwork to the test as they compete to become our Mini Harvest champions! 🏆

While you’re here, take a wander around the farm and have a browse of our fresh farm produce stalls, with plenty of lovely local goodies to take home. 🥕🌿🍯

It’s a great chance to support our Young Farmers, enjoy a day at the farm and see what they’ve been learning and getting up to! 💚

☀️ IMPORTANT NOTICE – FARM CLOSURE ☀️

We’re really sorry, but due to the extreme heat forecast, Wellgate Community Farm will be closed to the public on Wednesday 12th, Thursday 13th and Friday 14th August. 🐐🐑🦙🐰

This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly, but the welfare and safety of our animals has to come first. ❤️ During periods of extreme heat, our team needs to focus all of our time and attention on keeping the animals cool, comfortable and safe.

We’re so sorry for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause, especially to anyone who had planned a visit. 💚 We really appreciate your understanding and continued support.

🚨 Please do not visit the farm during these dates. If you arrive, our team will unfortunately have to turn you away so that we can concentrate on caring for the animals.

An update on our lovely guinea pig Tony💛

We wanted to start by saying a HUGE thank you to everyone who has shared, donated, and sent kind messages following our appeal for our guinea pig’s eye surgery. Your support has meant the world to us.🌍🐹

We’re so pleased to share that, after a worrying few days, she has now had her surgery and is recovering brilliantly! She has been so brave, and we’re delighted with how well she’s doing.🎉

We also wanted to let everyone know that, after seeking further veterinary advice, we were able to find another practice that carried out the treatment for £500, rather than the original £1250 quote we had received. We’re incredibly grateful this option became available.💛

Because of this, we will be updating the fundraising target on our Zeffy page to reflect the actual cost of her treatment. We believe it’s important to be completely transparent with everyone who has supported us.🐹

Thanks to your generosity, we’ve already raised a wonderful amount towards her surgery. However, we still have some of the cost left to cover- and as a charity, unexpected veterinary costs have a huge impact on our finances. Every donation, no matter how small, as well as every share and forward continues to make a huge difference and helps us provide the care our animals need.🫂💛

Thank you again for helping give this little girl the care she needed. Your generosity has made a real difference, and we’re so happy to be able to share such positive news with you all. 💛🐹
