Your wastewater treatment system may still be operating — but it likely wasn’t built for today’s pressures.

Rising energy costs, tighter environmental standards, and increased rainfall are putting ageing infrastructure under growing strain. While short-term fixes may keep systems running, they often lead to higher costs and reduced resilience over time.

Refurbishment isn’t just about replacing old equipment. It’s about improving performance, reducing operational costs, and preparing treatment systems for today’s challenges.

ARM joined this week's Constructed Wetlands Association conference as a founder and accredited member.

Amy Harley presented on the award-winning Hanningfield STRB system for waterworks sludge treatment, while Andy Freeman presented a long-term study on aerated wetlands for stormwater runoff treatment, challenging the evidence gap and promoting wider adoption to meet SORP regulatory objectives.

Why consider a reedbed to treat your water?

✅Very low energy demand, relying on natural biological processes and gravity.
✅Minimal chemical use – Pollutants are removed through microbial activity, filtration, and plant uptake, rather than chemical dosing.
✅Low operating and maintenance costs – Fewer moving parts and simpler infrastructure reduces maintenance and long-term operating expenses.
✅High process resilience – Reedbeds can tolerate fluctuations in flow and pollutant load better than many mechanical systems and continue operating during power outages.
✅Long asset lifespan – Most components are passive (soil, gravel, vegetation), so systems can operate effectively for decades with minor refurbishment.

✅Lower carbon footprint – Reduced electricity consumption, minimal chemical use, and simple infrastructure significantly cut lifecycle emissions.

✅Environmental and aesthetic benefits – Reedbeds support biodiversity and blend naturally into landscapes rather than appearing as industrial infrastructure.

Think reedbeds stop working in winter? Think again.

With the right design, they function year-round, even in sub-zero temperatures. Key to their cold-weather success:

✅ Insulating layers of mulch and reed litter keep bacteria active underground
✅ Water temperature self-stabilises, balancing energy inputs and outputs naturally
✅ Smart design adapts for slower bacterial activity in colder conditions
✅ Civil components are frost-protected, just like any standard construction project

Why should you keep your reedbed well-maintained?

✅Treatment effectiveness - it'll keep treating at the level you want.
✅Ease of use - a well-maintained system doesn't work as hard to treat, meaning it'll last longer.
✅Regulatory compliance - a small maintenance fee can prevent large fines for non-compliance.

Avove Utilities, in association with DLJ Water LTD, recently hosted a tour of Northern Ireland Water's Aghanloo wastewater treatment works.

The newly installed system features two stages of cutting-edge wetland technology, designed by ARM:

Stage 1 – Phragmifiltre®: A fully green approach to wastewater treatment — low-carbon, low-energy, and with significantly reduced whole-life operating costs. It biologically treats crude sewage directly, removing the need for conventional primary settlement tanks, sludge management, and tanker movements.

Stage 2 – Forced Bed Aeration (FBA™): Provides additional filtration and biological treatment, including full ammonia removal.

Over 10,000 reeds have been planted, and the entire build sits within the footprint of the previous site — limiting construction impact and CAPEX requirements.

Venture partners Lowry Building & Civil Engineering and Deane Public Works Ltd were in attendance, along with other select industry professionals.

Clabby in Northern Ireland needed a replacement system to meet increasing population and ammonia needs - and our Phragmifiltre® system does both.

✅Ammonia levels at 0.50 mg/l - less than 20% of what is needed
✅BOD = 2.34 mg/l
✅Fits under 0.2 hectare building limit
✅Keeps sludge on site, to reduce costs of removal
✅Asset to the area, blending into the environment with no odours

Most wastewater solutions just treat the problem. ARM reedbeds do more than that — they're a strategic investment in your future operations.

Engineered for simplicity, they reduce the risk of system failure, cut power and chemical costs, and run passively without the need for skilled operators. That means lower costs, less site time, and no vulnerability when staff move on.
