A really lovely surprise arrived at the shop today.
A few weeks ago, Lilian, Janet, Sue, Sharon and Tracy visited us while celebrating Lilian’s 90th birthday and taking part in the Lavinia Stamps Stamp Trail around Ruthin.
Today we received this beautiful handmade card from them, thanking us for the welcome they received when they came into the shop. It was completely unexpected and really did make our day.
The last few months have been pretty difficult for the shop, so things like this mean more than you might realise. Every person who comes through the door, makes a purchase, recommends us or takes the time to say something kind genuinely makes a difference.
It also feels like a good opportunity to say how grateful I am for our little team. They really are amazing. They’ve kept everything going, looked after the shop and given our customers such a lovely welcome at a time when I haven’t always been able to be there. I honestly couldn’t have managed without them.
Thank you so much to Lilian, Janet, Sue, Sharon and Tracy for taking the time to make and send such a thoughtful card. We hope you had a wonderful time celebrating Lilian’s 90th birthday.
And a huge thank you to Lavinia Stamps for organising the Stamp Trail and making Naturally Ethical part of it. It’s brought so many lovely people through our door and we’re incredibly grateful to have been included.
The Stamp Trail is still running, so there’s still time to take part and discover some of Ruthin’s lovely independent businesses along the way.

Say hello to Mathilda the Cow and Pearl the Goose. They’re incredibly soft, suitable from birth, and have so many lovely little details that make Wrendale plush toys so special.

Sales at Naturally Ethical are down almost 34% compared with the same three months last year.
Over recent months, we’ve seen a significant reduction in the number of customers coming through our doors. The ongoing works have brought noise, dust and disruption, while access, parking and moving around the town centre are more difficult than usual. Whatever the reasons, the result for us has been a substantial drop in trade.
At the same time, there is no financial support available for businesses affected by the disruption. Business rates have increased, suppliers are facing rising costs of their own, and all the usual overheads remain whether sales are strong or not.
Naturally Ethical employs three local people and supports a wide network of small independent suppliers and producers. The impact of reduced trade extends far beyond our shop alone.
The past few years have also brought ongoing health challenges for me personally, which means I do not always have the flexibility I would like when it comes to working in the business.
Taken together, these factors mean we have to take a realistic and honest look at the future viability of the shop. That includes reviewing our opening hours, but also considering what is sustainable for the business while the works continue and in the years ahead.
I want to be clear that the work completed so far on Well Street is looking excellent, and it is easy to see the positive changes being made. I genuinely hope the finished project delivers long-term benefits for Ruthin and everyone who lives, works and trades here.
The challenge for businesses is not recognising the potential benefits. It is finding a way to remain viable until those benefits are realised.

Mae’r palmantau newydd ar Well Street eisoes yn edrych yn dda iawn ac yn teimlo’n llawer mwy diogel, ac rydym yn edrych ymlaen at weld y gwaith wedi ei gwblhau maes o law. Yn y cyfamser, mae misoedd o darfu yn anodd iawn i fusnesau annibynnol lleol tra bod y gwaith yn mynd ymlaen.

Fel mae llawer yn gwybod, mae hi wedi bod yn gyfnod heriol i fusnesau bach ers tro, ac rydym wedi gorfod gofyn am gefnogaeth y gymuned yn y gorffennol er mwyn helpu ni i aros ar agor. Mae Naturally Ethical yn fwy na siop a chaffi. Rydym yn cyflogi pobl leol, yn cefnogi cyflenwyr lleol ac yn gweithio’n galed i gynnig rhywbeth gwahanol a gofalus yn Rhuthun, o goffi organig a chacennau cartref i nwyddau ail-lenwi, anrhegion, cynnyrch harddwch a hufen iâ lleol Chilly Cow.

Os ydych yn gallu parhau i siopa’n lleol yn ystod y cyfnod yma, mae hynny’n gwneud gwahaniaeth gwirioneddol. Mae pob ymweliad, coffi a phryniant yn helpu cefnogi busnesau annibynnol a’r bobl y tu ôl iddyn nhw tra bod gwaith canol y dref yn parhau.

A reminder that Naturally Ethical remains open throughout the works on the square.

The new pavements on Well Street are already looking really good and feel much safer, and we are looking forward to seeing the finished result once all of the works are completed. In the meantime, the reality of months of disruption is incredibly difficult for independent businesses while the work is ongoing.

As many people know, small independent businesses have already been facing challenging times and we have previously spoken openly about needing community support to help us remain open. Naturally Ethical is more than a shop and cafĂŠ. We employ local people, support local suppliers and work hard to offer something thoughtful and different in Rhuthun, from organic coffee and homemade cakes to refill essentials, gifts, beauty products and local Chilly Cow ice cream.

If you are able to continue shopping locally during this period, it genuinely makes a difference. Every visit, coffee and purchase helps support independent businesses and the people behind them while the town centre works continue.
