Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reveals that birthdays aren’t as random as they seem, with some dates being far more common than others 🎂 Analysis of birth records between 2012-2022 show a clear pattern - September is the most popular birth month and most popular birth date being 27th September. Coincidence? Not quite. Many September babies are conceived in December or around New Year’s. More time together, less stress, more cozy moments...😍
The festive season is a surprisingly quiet time for births - the least common day to be born is Boxing Day (December 26th) followed by by Christmas Day
Whilst many of us focus on our estimated due date, only 5% of babies are born on their EDD 📅 The term ‘estimated due date’ means there’s not one definite date of arrival but an ‘estimated’ window in which most babies are born - that’s between 37-42 weeks…1 whole month! So don’t stress about dialling in on a specific date - use that time to boost your oxytocin, connect to breathwork and prep your flexible birth preferences and as we say in hypnobirthing - baby will come, when baby is ready

BOOST YOUR ENDORPHINS ✨ We may be bedazzling our bumps in pregnancy, but how can we keep that sparkle sustained during birth? It’s all about boosting our endorphins. Endorphins are natural hormones that act as mood boosters and powerful painkillers. They also minimise stress and can create a surge of pleasure that can help you calmly manage contractions and the sensations of labour & birth
🧠 These wonderful hormones are created and stored in the pituitary gland - a small, bean-shaped gland situated at the base of your brain which influences nearly every part of your body
🤰🏻Endorphin levels increase toward the end of pregnancy. During labour, endorphin levels rise during each surge, most noticeably in the second stage. It takes two weeks after birth for endorphin levels in the body to return to normal
😬 Stress hormones counter endorphins in the body. So the more calm and relaxed you are in labour, the more endorphins produced, the less stress hormones created and less discomfort is felt
✨ By boosting your endorphins you can truly transcend to an altered state of consciousness in labour and birth…high hopes right!

From pregnancy to parenthood, the most generous thing we can offer ourselves is a pause - a true, intentional break 😌⏸️ In a world that moves quickly, physical tension often accumulates unnoticed, manifesting as clenched jaws, furrowed brows and tight shoulders - sound familiar?
These physical manifestations of stress act as a feedback loop, keeping your nervous system in a state of high alert. Ever wondered why the smell of your newborn baby smell is SO addictive? 🥰 The unique scent is thought to be a mix of chemicals from lingering amniotic fluid, sweat glands and vernix caseosa - the white, cream cheese like substance that covers babies at birth. The smell can last for a few weeks and then gradually fade away, but it may linger on the baby’s hair and skin. All this combined, it’s this intoxicating aroma that provides a pathway to our brains 🧠 and to ultimately our hearts, binding us to that gorgeous little life in front of us!
But how does this baby smell benefit us parents? Take a deep sniff of your newborn whilst snuggled up to us and you’ll activate a huge surge of dopamine. This reaction is a ‘reward response’, similar to what happens when you finally tuck into a food you’ve been craving. The surge of dopamine caused by sniffing our babies elicits maternal care functions such as breastfeeding and protection
The newborn smell also plays a huge role in parent-child bonding. Scent has been shown to trigger memories, protect us against harmful toxins and bind us to things we love. Also, in a physiological sense, that amazing smell can even help mothers relax postnatally - so take in a deep breath and savour that gorgeous newborn smell! 👶🏻

WATERS BREAKING 💦 Did you know that only around 1 in 10 experience waters breaking before the onset of labour? Your baby develops inside a bag of fluid called the amniotic sac. When your baby is ready to be born, the sac breaks and the fluid comes out through your va**na - this is your waters breaking
TRICKLE OR GUSH - HINDWATERS & FOREWATERS? The sac of amniotic fluid is described as having two sections – the forewaters (in front of baby’s head) and the hindwaters (behind baby’s head). A ‘hindwater leak’ refers to an opening in the amniotic membranes behind the baby’s head. Often this is experienced by the woman as an occasional light trickle as the fluid has to run down the outside of the sac and past the baby’s head to get out. When the forewaters break mum will experience a gentle pop and a gush of water
WHAT TO DO IF MY WATERS BREAK? Breathe, keep calm and pop on a sanitary pad to absorb the flow and be sure to remember the acronym C.O.A.T…
C - COLOUR OF WATER💧Amniotic fluid is normally clear or slightly tinted yellow. However, it’s important to understand any discolouration of your waters and what it means…
🟢🟤Green or brown fluid: Inform your care provider straight away and head to hospital as baby will be at risk of meconium aspiration at birth or it can be a sign of fetal distress. Meconium (baby’s first poo) in the water doesn’t always indicate a problem but it’s best to be monitored just in case
🔴Deep red fluid: May indicate blood and problems with the placenta
O - ODOUR👃🏻Is there an unpleasant smell from the waters around the baby? A strange smell from this water could be a sign of infection. The water around the baby has a very faint sweet smell but it’s not unpleasant.
A - AMOUNT OF FLUID 🌊 Was there a little trickle or water or a massive gush?
T - TIME ⏰ The clock starts from when the waters break. Once they rupture, your uterus is no longer the safe sterile environment it was and if your baby is in there more than 24 hours, the chance of infection increases.

Have you experienced Braxton Hicks in your pregnancy? Know as ‘practice’ or ‘false’ labour contractions, Braxton Hicks are when the womb contracts and relaxes - these practice contractions help to prepare your uterine muscles for the actual labour process. Not everyone experiences Braxton Hicks contractions, however, if you do they are completely normal part of pregnancy and you can usually feel them during the second or third trimester
WHAT DO BRAXTON HICKS FEEL LIKE?
They feel like an irregular, painless tightening of the abdomen lasting about 30 seconds but can be as long as two minutes. You may notice your bump hardens and remains tense for several seconds
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BRAXTON HICKS & LABOUR CONTRACTIONS?

I loved supporting Rome based couple Alex & Dom with their hypnobirthing journey 👶🏻🇮🇹 After taking our one-to-one online course, they welcomed their baby girl with a calm and confidence physiological hypnobirth - this is their incredible birth story…
“It sounds strange to say now, but after doing hypnobirthing with Nicola, I was actually excited to go into labour and finally meet my little girl. When my contractions started at 5am, I kept thinking, Is this really it? They were on and off for a while, but the moment I realised this was happening, that today or tomorrow we’d meet our baby, I felt genuinely excited to put everything Nicola had taught us into practice. One of the biggest things for me was that hypnobirthing didn’t just prepare me, it prepared my partner too - we did it together
I stayed at home until 4pm, breathing through contractions on my birthing ball, feeling calm and relaxed rather than panicked. At one point I was even completely alone while my partner went to grab some last minute things, and I still felt in control
By the time contractions were 4 minutes apart, we headed to the hospital. I was only 1cm dilated when I arrived, but within an hour I was fully dilated and ready to push. Of course there were moments where I thought, I can’t do this. But because my partner had learnt the hypnobirthing techniques too, he knew exactly how to bring me back down. I truly look back on my labour as something we did together. I breathed, hummed and trusted my body to bring our daughter into the world - I was on all fours and I lifted her to my chest. I wouldn’t change a thing about my birth. Thank you Nicola for helping me go into birth feeling calm, empowered, and excited instead of afraid and anxious”
