WHY DOES THE SEA SOMETIMES GLOW BLUE AROUND CORNWALL?

Imagine walking along a Cornish beach after dark, watching a wave break and suddenly seeing the water sparkle with an almost electric-blue glow.
No, somebody hasn't fitted LED lights underneath the Atlantic.
You're witnessing one of the ocean's most spectacular natural phenomena: bioluminescence.
The glow can be produced by microscopic marine organisms, including certain types of dinoflagellates, which are tiny plankton living in seawater. Some species can produce light through a chemical reaction inside their cells.
And here's the really clever part...
The glow can be triggered when the water around them is disturbed.
So when a wave breaks, somebody walks through shallow water, or a paddle moves through the sea, thousands of these microscopic organisms can briefly illuminate.
The result can look like someone has scattered bright blue stars through the water.
Scientists think this flashing behaviour may help some dinoflagellates defend themselves. One idea known as the “burglar alarm” hypothesis suggests the flash can expose or startle a small predator attacking the plankton, potentially attracting an even larger predator to eat the attacker.
Basically, the plankton's defence strategy may be:
“If you're going to eat me, I'm turning the lights on so something bigger can find YOU.”
Bioluminescent plankton can occasionally be seen around the Cornish coastline, particularly during warmer conditions when concentrations of plankton become high enough.
But predicting a display is difficult.
Water temperature, currents, nutrients, wind and plankton concentrations can all play a part, which is why one Cornish bay might suddenly glow beautifully while another beach only a few miles away does absolutely nothing.
And although we often associate bioluminescence with tropical oceans, the phenomenon certainly isn't limited to them.
Many marine creatures can produce their own light, from microscopic plankton to jellyfish, squid and animals living thousands of metres beneath the ocean surface.
In fact, bioluminescence is incredibly common in the deep ocean, where sunlight cannot pe*****te.
TODAY'S OCEAN FACT: Bioluminescence is often described as “glowing”, but the organisms aren't storing sunlight like glow-in-the-dark stickers. They're actually producing light through chemical reactions.
So if you're ever lucky enough to see a Cornish wave suddenly light up electric blue after dark, stop for a moment and enjoy it.
