SEED TIME

It's the time of year to start harvesting our seed crops, drying and processing them. These are very lovely Northeaster beans for Seeds of Scotland and Holly's special Nomadic Grex for The Real Seed Catalogue . Prop 2 is getting very full of curing onions and drying seed. It's always so nice to take some time to sit and process seed together, good to remember and feel connected to something humans have been doing for a very long time 🫘

Late summer on the farm 🌞 - From Connie

Hoeing in the quick succession brassica plot yesterday. This area gave us such a headache this year, with loads of thistles coming up and failed sowings early in the year. We decided the only way to deal with the thistles was to 'bastard fallow' and do repeated cultivations over the summer. We don't do this lightly! Fingers crossed it's looking much better and we're happy to have this area back in full production for the autumn. We know it will need some help to get the soil back in good heart, which is tricky without giving the thistles too much nutrition.

Beans, greens, apples, hoeing radicchio, baby courgettes, some more nice views because I've finally got a good camera and the beautiful crowd breeding broad bean flock.

It's feeling autumnal already and actually thats my favourite time of the year so I'm quite happy about that 😊

As the nights begin to draw in, mornings cool and thoughts begin to turn to autumn we’re very excited to announce we’ll be celebrating the autumn equinox with Carolina (hemlock) and Jordan (Westelaken) on the farm.

hemlock is the swamp-raised, phone-fi, alt-folk project of Louisiana/Chicago-based Carolina Chauffe who’s song-a-day practice and constant touring has produced an incredible amount of music over recent years. Jordan from Toronto outfit Westelaken will bring beautiful and crunchy alt-country jams.

This is an early show at the end of CSA pick up day; we’ll be playing through dusk and feel free to bring a treat or dish or bevvie for yourself or to share! potluck welcome, so bring a dish if you wish!

We’re delighted to say Tomato Fest is now SOLD OUT! We’re so excited to share tomato joy this Saturday afternoon between 12 and 6pm. Ticket holders will have just received an email with further details and the day’s schedule and to anyone else, sorry if you’ve missed out - this is a ticketed event so we can’t cater for walk-ins as we need to carefully manage numbers on the farm for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

We plan to have a couple more events on the farm this autumn, so watch this space!

Took advantage of the duller weather today to have a good ol’ prune in the tomatoes. Interrupted the black bird that’s been nibbling at our cillegia seed crop - could it be the same one that was eating tomatoes in this tunnel last year?

We also harvested about 120kg courgettes which is a little bit crazy. Get in touch if you want lots and lots of beautiful mixed courgettes - yellow, green, stripey and Syrian (cheers Seeds of Scotland they’re fab, we’ll be growing more next year)
