What a fabulous fruity bank holiday!
Spent bank holiday Monday morning picking apples at the lovely Newton Farm in the Tamar valley with the - picking fruit destined for food banks across Cornwall. This is so important because so much of the food available in foodbanks is tins, packets, and otherwise highly processed food. The gleaning network get fresh fruits and veg, often from organic farms, that is hard to harvest directly to those that need it most.
Our hosts this time were Kate and Andy, who are turning their 20 acres into an idyllic nature reserve and education centre, with new (relatively speaking) hedgerows and orchards, grazed by cattle, elderly pet sheep and pigs π
The absolute machines that are the gleaners picked half a tonne of apples in one morning πͺπ»πͺπ»πͺπ» BOOM!!
Then I headed straight over to a nearby orchard where I had heard rumour that they have Rumbullion cherries. And not only did they have Rumbullions, but they had a tree grown from a grafting that was taken from the very trees that grew here when the Barrett brothers owned it!!! Mary Martin and James Evans have been painstakingly collecting samples of local trees over the past 50 years, and serendipitously for me, our farm was one of the ones they took cuttings from. They have graciously agreed to let me take some cuttings, so not only have we found Rumbullion, we have found our very own, and are bringing them home!!! πππ To say I am absolutely buzzing is an understatement πππ
Mary was so gracious, sharing her knowledge built up over the years and impeccable record keeping, giving us a guided tour of her beautiful garden and treating us to tea and delicious home made cake. Genuinely life affirming stuff and feeling like my cup is very full right now ππ
