Nice things in Sloping Field. All the wildflowers are spreading year on year. There are tiny trees all over the place. Lots of bees. Lots of moths. Lots of birds. I hope for more and more butterflies and moths this year, the populations are a key indicator of our success in increasing biodiversity on these (almost) 4 acres. Waiting for it to become a woodland is a long job, but waiting is fun when things change and evolve like this. Succession = success!

This is the first row of garlic from one of the polytunnels. We have many rows more to harvest! We always grow a lot of garlic and have been using our own seed for many years. It's always such a pleasure to enjoy the first fresh garlic of the year.

Picking for the shop in the morning. Doesn't get any better than this in early summer. Beetroot at this size is tender and sweet and the tops are lovely now too. The salad is amazing this year due to the rain and sunshine. Got to love June.

Filling the garden with plants has been one of nicest parts of turning the field to a productive space. (Though I do like the vegetables too) The flowers bring so much life and the dense areas of planting in the borders provide lots of interest, nectar and beauty for insects and visitors. The wildflower track is overflowing this year, amazing that it's growing in stone only and the plugs we planted were smaller than a pea.

The wet meadow is changing daily. It will soon be full of purple knapweed. The marbled white butterflies usually appear soon after. Exciting times for butterfly fans - we don't see that very often around this part of the North York Moors (tho that had been changing over the last 10 years as populations spread north and breed on favourable sites like this one.)

Okay okay, so this is the world's worst video but if you watch closely you can see the many tiny insects over the ponds as well as 3 pairs of broad-bodied chasers, lots of damselflies and a pair of swallows on the deep pond. I scared the heron off unfortunately. Making a natural clean-water pond is a slow process and without the usual planting you might do, it can look a bit sketchy for a while. Waiting for the right plants to colonise this area is sometimes annoying, but the wildlife doesn't seem to think so.
