We’re back open after a lovely little rest over the Bank Holiday, and we hope all of our wonderful customers had a brilliant one too!

Harvey is already busy getting the counter prepped for another week, and we have to say… it’s looking absolutely fantastic!

We’re especially impressed with our pork on the counter today. 🐖

Completely free range and from our very own farm, our pigs are raised outdoors for their whole lives, growing naturally at their own pace. No rushing, just good old fashioned farming and plenty of space to roam.

And when you start with great animals and look after them properly, the quality really does speak for itself.

Let’s talk about our famous homemade Steak & Guinness Pies…

We were delighted to cater another buffet at Seahouses Social Club today, which meant I got the chance to open one of our family sized Steak & Guinness Pies and show you exactly what all the fuss is about!

Our beef is sourced from Emble Farms, less than a mile from the shop, before we slow cook it for a full 8 hours in a rich, delicious gravy with real Guinness, creating the most tender, melt in the mouth filling.

Once cooled, our ladies get to work filling every single pie right to the absolute brim with that delicious local beef, before topping them with golden, flaky puff pastry. 🥧

Now just imagine one of these straight out of the oven, served with creamy mashed potatoes, lashings of gravy and some fresh seasonal vegetables…

You can see why they’re one of our most popular sellers! 😍

And just look at how much beef is packed into them, proper local beef, made properly, and absolutely full to the brim with thick chunky bites.

Delicious doesn’t quite cover it…

That’s a wrap on our very first summer here at The Herd! 🖤🐄

What a summer it has been! From the early mornings to the long days, the busy Saturdays, endless pies and sausage rolls, keeping the counters stocked, prepping mountains of meat, butchering, baking, packing orders and, of course, looking after all of our wonderful customers, I genuinely couldn’t be prouder of my little team!

A huge THANK YOU to every single one of them for the hard work, commitment and graft they’ve put in over the last few months. It certainly hasn’t always been easy, but they’ve worked their socks off and somehow managed to keep smiling through the busiest days!

And to all of our customers, both the familiar faces who have supported us from day one and the many new faces who have discovered The Herd this summer, thank you. 🖤

We’ve had such a successful first summer and it really does mean the world to us. Every order, every visit, every recommendation, every review and every kind word helps our little business grow, and we honestly couldn’t do it without you.

It’s been amazing to see the shop so busy, the counters flying out and our little team rising to every challenge that’s been thrown at them. We’ve learned a lot, worked harder than we probably thought possible and, most importantly, had a bloody good time doing it! 😜

So, from all of us at The Herd, thank you for making our first summer such a special one.

Now… dare I say it…

BRING ON CHRISTMAS! 🎄😂

Cheers🖤🥂

Just a little snippet of some of the fantastic reviews we’ve received over the summer!

A huge thank you to each and every one of our customers, and especially to those who take the time to leave us such lovely reviews.

As a small, independent business, every kind word, recommendation and glowing review really does mean the world to us. It helps us more than you know and makes all the hard work worthwhile!

If you’ve visited us recently and enjoyed your experience, we’d absolutely love to hear from you. Why not take a couple of minutes to leave us a review on Google?

Every single one is hugely appreciated by the whole team. Thank you for supporting our little business!

I get asked almost every day, “How do you take them to the abattoir?”

Even after doing this for years, the answer is, it’s still heartbreaking.

Just because we farm livestock for food doesn’t mean we don’t care about them. We nurture them, feed them, water them, check on them, cuddle them, treat them when they’re poorly and spend every single day making sure they’re safe, comfortable and well looked after.

That final day is still the worst day for us.

The thing I remind myself is that these animals have had a really good life. They’ve had sunshine, fresh air and space to enjoy being animals. They’ve been fed and watered every day, cared for when they’re unwell and watched over from the moment they arrive until the day they leave us. There isn’t a day where their welfare isn’t our priority.

There’s no factory farming here. No force feeding. No rushing growth. Our livestock are slow grown, naturally, at their own pace, outdoors and in the way we believe animals deserve to be raised.

Our job is to make sure that while they are in our care, they have the best life we can possibly give them.

So yes, it is incredibly difficult. We would be lying if we said otherwise.

But we also have to remember why we do it. We’re farming to put food on people’s tables, and we’re proud to do that in the most respectful, responsible and compassionate way we can.

If we didn’t produce food, someone else would.

So if our animals are going to become food, we want to know that they have had dignity in life, dignity in death, and the very best care every step of the way.

My dad always told me, “the day we stop caring is the day we should give up.”
