The Micro Brewery was completed by Mark in February 2007 and he soon began brewing exclusively for ‘The Strands.’

The first beer that was delivered, being a ‘Light Hoppy amber Bitter’ at 3.8% and labelled as the intriguing ‘Errmmm.’
“We couldn’t decide on a name and all the family sat around saying ‘Errmm… what can we call it?’ So it seemed an obvious but quirky title and it stuck!’

nstant success and not being one to sit on his laurels, Mark quickly followed it up with a dark smooth ‘Porter Style’ 5.0% ale called ‘T’ Errmmm-inator’.

“With our own ideas and hundreds of suggestions from customers, it’s christening finally arrived after three weeks of deliberation.”

Served up with the strap line of ‘Ale be black,’ it soon became an outstanding success, gaining tumultuous plaudits and rightly being Awarded the Champion Porter of Cumbria by CAMRA. More accolades have followed and their ‘Barley Wine’ has also been bestowed with the CAMRA seal of approval when it was given the ‘Champion Beer of Britain, Cumbrian Award.’

A festival of the Strands Beers is held each May and more information can be found on this website. All the hard work, allied with a strong and growing reputation, sees them go from strength to strength establishing ‘The Strands Micro Brewery’ as one of the finest in England. This has seen him expand the range on offer, presenting over twenty beers throughout the seasons and with more to come, he now employs full time staff to ensure that ‘The Strands Micro Brewery and Inn’ is synonymous with the finest of real ales.

80 YEARS YOUNG! RUNNING THE FELLS!

My good friend and Lakeland legend David Powell-Thompson will be heading off Seatallan to The Strands Inn & Brewery for his final named peak fundraising for Hospice at Home West Cumbria in memory of his late and beloved wife Maggie 🥹🥹👍

Despite the literal ups and downs in recent months, David is now on track to complete his challenge.

As many of you know and will appreciate, I fold David in very high regard.

He’s not only a good friend but also a star in much of my work on TV and elsewhere 🥹🫡🎥

Hence, I hope lots of folk offer him a thanks for his knowledge and work over the years including working with yours truly and donate to the charity that meant so much to his family.

It’s ironic really that only yesterday our new Prime Minister spoke about such things and rightly so in my humble views.

I hope to see some of you there in Nether Wasdale on Sunday and more importantly no matter how small or large a sum of pennies donate to the cause 🤞🤞🙏🙏

And on a slight tangent….I must admit that when I head round to Wasdale I’ll sorely miss Maggie’s “boring blether” in my earhole and telling me off for being a naughty boy leading her husband astray (actually it was him!!) and her….I dunno why…the TASTIEST sandwiches I’ve ever enjoyed on the fells! 😆😆😢😢😢😢

I say the latter with deep affection of course! ❤️❤️❤️

Had a great day out with David Powell-Thompson joining him and friends for four named summits around Windemere as part of his fantastic fundraising event 80 before 80. David is aiming to complete 80 named summits before his 80th birthday in August 2026 raising money for West Cumbria Hospice at Home in honor of his late wife Maggie.
