Woodfine Wine

Woodfine Wine Restoring a biodiverse ecosystem to produce exceptional organic produce – with wine at its heart ? We use ancient winemaking techniques.

Our Story:

Our wines capture something ephemeral: the time and place in which they were made. That place is Newbarn Farm, a 300-year-old smallholding in the Chiltern Hills that backs onto the ancient and richly diverse Hodgemoor Woods. Our Smallholding:

Newbarn is becoming organic for the first time – creating a regenerative ecosystem that produces exquisite food and drink. Already, the farm is

home to honeybees, wildflower meadows, hedgerows, chickens and some grazing animals. And then there’s the larger ecosystem of Seer Green, our village. Almost everything we do is done locally – from families tending to our hens, to local artists creating our labels. Wherever we can, we keep produce, work and money flowing within our community. www.newbarnfarm.org

Minimal Intervention:

Our wines are a record of how each year passes through our farm. The sun, rain and peculiarities of any given year express themselves in the land. Every element of our ecosystem contributes: there are insects and birds among the wildflowers, manure from the chickens and sheep tending to our meadow grasses and flowers in the old-fashioned way. Minimal intervention is at the heart of this. Time leads the process – we’re simply stewards.

H E L I O C E N T R I C.

A new wine.

Named for the idea that changed our understanding of the world: the sun, rather than us, at the centre.

And for Galileo Galilei — who stood by what he could see and measure, even when it contradicted what he was told to believe.

Eppur si muove.
And yet it moves.

There is something of that in natural wine too. A quiet resistance to convention. To adding, correcting, manufacturing and controlling.

The vines are PIWI — Sauvignac, Cab Noir and Cab Blanc — bred to resist disease and grown with zero pesticides or herbicides. The farm is organic. The grapes are hand-picked and the wine is made with nothing added, nothing removed. No sulphites, fining, filtration or other interventions.

Just vine, soil, water, sunlight and wild fermentation.

And so we wanted the label to tell the same story.

It is a cyanotype — one of the earliest forms of photography, made simply by exposing light-sensitive material to the sun. The image is formed by light itself, captured in its most elemental form.

Sunlight captured on paper.
Sunlight captured in glass.

The most rudimentary form of photography, paired with the most unadorned form of winemaking.

Two ways of capturing the same thing.

Heliocentric.

Range.

The chickens don’t love extreme heat. But they made it through 5 heatwaves still laying. Remarkably resilient.

They get to range the meadows year round making sure they’re well fed. Their manure keeps our vines, apples and veg beds well fed. And their eggs have kept our beautiful Seer Green customers well fed.

56,000 eggs and counting.

Liquid sunshine.

We don’t have as many grapes as we’d like, but it’s always a kind of wonder to see what a vine can conjure from sunlight, rain, soil and air.

Nothing more.

Just sunlight falling on a leaf, rain passing through the earth, roots reaching down, leaves reaching up — and somehow, out of all that chaos, life makes order.

The universe tends towards entropy.
Life, magnificently, pushes the other way.

It gathers. It builds. It transforms.

And somehow, with natural wine, you can taste the sunlight in it. Nothing else.

“Il vino è la luce del sole, tenuta insieme dall’acqua.”
“Wine is sunlight, held together by water”.
Galileo Galilei.

Pain and Gain.

Some of the apple trees couldn’t deal with it. Others of same vintage are faring better.

Accepting casualties and losses is going to become the new norm.

Harvest.

Not long now. The apple tree is replete with fruit. Most of the others are not after a big year last year. Like all of us, they need a break.

Folk.

It’s as if this place was designed for community folk music. Well, last night the Seer Green community folk singers came and sang about nature in nature, with natural wine.

Just perfect.

Not angry, disappointed.

Whilst we have some lovely organic grapes. Not as many as we’d like (after the frosts). Clean as a whistle so far though.

Integration.

Ecosystem integration is important, even in a vineyard and farm context. Perhaps especially so. Producing foods in an integrated mosaic of habitats isn’t without challenges, but it’s beautiful when you see it and feel it.

There is a vineyard over there somewhere…

Near distance: wildflower meadows
Middle distance: organic vineyard
Far distance: more wildflower meadows scrub, hedge, woodland.

There’s room for everything here.
