Ettrick Pedigree's

Ettrick Pedigree's TEXEL SHEEP and ABERDEEN ANGUS CATTLE Established in 1982 Ettrick Texels, regularly attend many of the national and local shows and sale.

Focus has been put on purchasing rams possessing the qualities to best suit the three markets we constantly aim for - these three main markets are,

Ø Production of good skinned, well fleshed shearling rams to be sold annually at the Kelso ram sales in September.

Ø Breeding top quality ram lambs to capture the pedigree breeders market, in order to do so these lambs must have extra qu

alities which can include depth of hair, colours of the nose and eyes and flashiness as well as maintaining all of the traits and qualities of top commercial animals - being correct on their legs and feet, with good tight skinned fleeces and well fleshed bodies.

Ø Our other main market that we focus on is the production of top quality females for stock and sale. We generally keep around 20 for stock, while the surplus females which are often twin or embryo sisters of the above, are kept for the sales in August and September as well as 20 being held back for our Select 7 in-lamb sale at the beginning of December at Lanark. Gimmers and Ewes are also held back for the in-lamb female sales at Chelford and Lanark in January. Embryo Transfer has been used successfully within the flock in order to promote and increase the numbers quality animals within the flock, this has also enabled us to be able to sell quality females from our best breeding lines.

Dispersal from G. Gray's autumn-calving herd draws widespread buyer support
The dispersal of autumn-calving females from the Ettrick Aberdeen-Angus herd, offered by G. Gray, proved one of the standout features of the female section at the May Stirling Bull Sales, with trade topping at 10,500 guineas and cattle heading to established herds across Scotland and the Borders.
Established in 2003, the Ettrick herd has built a strong reputation over more than two decades, with previous honours including Reserve Supreme Overall Champion at Perth, championships at Agri Expo, Stars of the Future and Carlisle, and both Native Champion and Best Purebred at LiveScot.
The consignment drew on proven cow families from the Bella, Rachel, Lucy, Ebony, Gaenor and Julia lines, with all cows and heifers served to Weeton Prince Carlos V532. Calves already born to this sire had arrived unassisted and were showing good early promise.
A particular highlight of the sale was the combination of Ettrick Julia Z329 and her July 2025-born bull calf Ettrick Jack Rabbit B382, which together realised 10,500 guineas when purchased by Grahamslaw Farming Partnership, Kelso. Julia, a daughter of Linton Gilbertines President S021 out of Tonley Julia P099, is a proven breeder acquired originally from the Tonley reduction. Her calf, Ettrick Jack Rabbit B382, made 6,000 guineas in his own right, with Julia herself selling at 4,500 guineas.
Three individual lots reached 6,000 guineas, next to hit that mark was Ettrick Ebony Z331, a 2023-born daughter of Linton Gilbertines President S021 out of Buckhurst Ebony T209, who sold with her heifer calf Ettrick Ebony B386 to J.H. & W.W. More, Kippen. Also at 6,000 guineas was Ettrick Lucy A349, a March 2024-born in-calf heifer from the Lucy family, described by the vendor as "one of my picks," which likewise went to Grahamslaw Farming Partnership.
Grahamslaw Farming Partnership were among the most active buyers throughout the sale, with further purchases including Ettrick Rachel X280 with her calf Ettrick Rockstar B389 at 5,000 guineas; Gretnahouse Ellen Erica X361 at 5,500 guineas and her daughter Ettrick Ellen Erica B385 at 4,000 guineas; and Ettrick Bella Z344 at 4,000 guineas.
Ettrick Bella S178, a 2016-born daughter of Ettrick Rockafella M109, described in the catalogue as a "super breeding cow" having produced a calf sold privately at £7,000 as a 12-month-old, sold for 3,000 guineas to E. Scott, Glamis. The same buyer paid a further 3,000 guineas for Ettrick Bella U213, by Logan Bar Davieboy P927, which had bred a first-prize heifer at LiveScot 2021 and two sons sold privately from home.
Ettrick Bella U209, also by Logan Bar Davieboy P927, sold with her calf Ettrick Boxer B392 for 4,200 guineas to J.D.M. Thomson, Eaglesfield. She had bred the reserve female champion at Stars of the Future 2024 and a bull that sold privately for £6,000.
Ettrick Lucy Y299, a 2022-born daughter of Linton Gilbertines President S021, sold with her calf Ettrick Leroy B390 for 4,500 guineas to J.D.M. Thomson. She is a full sister to the 6,000-guinea topper Ettrick Lucy A349 and to a home-bred bull that made £7,500.
Ettrick Rachel Y322, by Tonley Ramires N928, sold at 3,200 guineas to A. Simpson Ltd, Methven, who also secured Ettrick Gaenor Z335, a full sister to the LiveScot Native Champion, at 3,500 guineas, and Ettrick Julia A348, a Linton Gilbertines President S021 daughter from the Tonley Julia family, at 4,800 guineas.
Throughout the sale, the Ettrick consignment reflected the depth of a herd built on maternal reliability and proven cow families, with buyers from across Scotland and the Borders ensuring the bloodlines will be well represented going forward.
