Today I’ve been racing around the south west collecting vegetables from growers.

Tomorrow we will set up a HUGE display of West Country grown vegetables. This all comes direct from the farm no middle men, no wholesale markets, just squeaky fresh vegetables, direct from the farm gate to your dinner

🥕🥬 This is getting serious guys🥦🌽

Now our record breaking summer seems to be coming to an end and we’re getting or at least told we’re getting some significant rain over the next couple of weeks. It’s slowly coming to light the affects this has had on our farmers.

One thing I missed this year when driving all over the country doing our shows and events is that summer smell of fresh cut grass and that early evening noise of neighbours mowing their lawns. Think about it, how often have you done that this summer!!

Well now think if the grass hasn’t grown how have the crops, I’m not just talking about the ones I sell and we eat directly from the ground but the wheat and barley that goes through processing to use in food production and the crops grown for animal feed in the winter. It’s widely thought that yields will be down a Wapping 40%. 

So what does this mean for the everyday family? Quite simply it’s going to cost more, when things go short or difficult to get the price goes up (look at fuel prices) I’m not just talking veg, it’s going to be bread, tin food, meat, pretty much everything we eat one way or another at some point comes from a farm.

For many independent businesses in both retail and hospitality some vegetables are already becoming unaffordable. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about cauliflowers in the biggest UK wholesale market in London we’re £21, yes £21 that’s for a box of 6. Thats over £3 each. Bunched Beetroot is costing more at wholesale than we charge retail. 

I’m asking you, NO I’m begging you, use your independent shops. They often deal Direct with the farmers on a very personal and local level. Next time you pick up a loaf of bread, a pack of sausages or a bag of apples STOP & THINK, if I got that from an independent retailer (doesn’t matter which one) I would be doing my little bit to help my local community.

So today I went to the local veg farm and was treated to a guided tour. This is the process each carrot goes through shortly after being pick. Each carrot is hand loaded, washed and picked into bunches, before heading to the tying machine and into the pack house. Available at our Bell street shop tomorrow priced at JUST £1.50 each or 4 for £5

The freshness, quality and flavours are truly outstanding.

Please note. Due to the Red Weather warning for extreme heat over the next few day we have decided NOT to open. I’m afraid we just couldn’t hold any stock for any length of time with that intense heat. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the continued custom from so many loyal shoppers. We will of course keep this under constant review. Hope you all understand.
