Whilst one team was busy on the showground tackling pruning and repair jobs, another group of dedicated volunteers got stuck into packing rosettes ready for the show in August 🏵️

What a difference 52 years makes!

The first photograph was taken at the 1974 Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show, when Den and Mary Sweet were crowned Supreme Dairy Champions with their outstanding British Friesian.

Fast forward to 2025, and the Supreme Dairy Cattle Championship was won by Gilbert Loader, pictured in the second photograph with his prize-winning Holstein🐄

With just a couple of months to go until this year's show, anticipation is building as we look forward to crowning a new Supreme Dairy Champion.

We are delighted to welcome BV Dairy back as the sponsor of our Dairy Cattle Championship for 2026.

What better day to announce that will be returning to the show this August as our Official Bar Partners. A true Dorset brewing institution, Hall & Woodhouse has been crafting Badger beers since 1777, built on generations of brewing heritage, craftsmanship, and independent family tradition.

Want to be part of something rewarding?
We're excited to welcome new volunteers to our working party and the beautiful Turnpike Showground. And the best part? You can get involved without the hustle and bustle of show week!

When: Saturday 20th June, for 2 hours (10 AM to Midday)
Where: Show Office (Gate 0), Turnpike Showground, SP7 9PL

- Contribute to your community
- Meet new people
- Learn about the workings of the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Agricultural Society, our show and the showground.

After the work is done, there is time for a spot of socialising – it's a great way to connect with fellow volunteers and members of our society.

Whether you're thinking about getting involved or just curious about what we do, this is the perfect chance to dip your toes in. No previous experience is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to help!
