Every herd needs a Maggie!

Wildly differing from last summer, our cows are now so well fence trained that they don't even trust a newly opened gate!

This is where Maggie saves the day 💪

Smart or daft, who knows?
All we know is she's instrumental to moooving the herd.

However there will always be a rebel and it's usually a Longhorn.

Zorro plays by her own rules as does Monty's calf Amelia. Luckily they're halter trained and quiet enough to catch in the field and walk through the gateway to fresh pasture!

End of May 🪻

We can breathe a sigh of relief now the first show of 2026 is done and dusted!

Leading up to a show we do a lot of intensive training, walking and washing them every day, to create strong bonds with our animals and forge habits in their behaviour.

We had a successful day at Shropshire County show - our teams behaved impeccably 👌

Mr Whitepeak came home with Blonde breed Champion and my Sycamore ladies won 2x Firsts, Homebred Champion & Reserve and Reserve Longhorn breed Champion 👍🏆

Silage fever has commenced in the Derbyshire Dales.
First cut is done ✔️ which is a massive relief. Our contractors next task is reseeding.

My show team decided to escape the garden and go for a tour of the village. Luckily they stood in the empty silage fields looking very perplexed and waited for me to walk them home!

Calving is almost complete but our outlier Hobnob finally had 2 lovely bull calf twins.
One was quite knuckled so after a couple of days he was getting left behind, so we made the executive decision to bring him home and hand rear him... well, Monty is!

We now only have 1 cull cow left to go!

May so far... 🪻

It's been a busy few weeks on the farm!

We've really ramped up show training, we aim to walk and wash the team once a day for 3 weeks before the first show.

We've brought both Longhorn and Blonde bulls home to ensure a tight calving block.

Poor Weasel had an injury to his foot, so needed bringing home sooner than I'd like. He served Xenolith on the way in, so luckily he's now covered all my cows!

His foot is on the mend, massive thanks to our wonderful trimmer, who also did Titan's feet plus the show team.

Otherwise we've been installing permanent wooden fencing with electric on mains... as our neighbours know, we struggled to keep the cows in last Summer!

Plus our team of wallers have been cracking on with our dilapidated limestone dry stone walls.

We've been grazing the cows tightly to make use of what grass we have!

Our draught sale at Bakewell went well and we're happy to hear all have settled in well in their new homes.

Calving is finished for the Longhorns (and accidental Blonghorn calves) and almost complete for the Blondes.

We haven't had to touch a cow since they've gone out, we drive round and find fresh dropped calves up and about! 👌
