We’re excited to have a beautiful new Ethiopian micro-lot from Roasting House on our shelves — and its story begins in one of the most extraordinary places in the world for coffee.
🌿 Ethiopia: the birthplace of coffee
Ethiopia is widely recognised as the birthplace of Coffea arabica. Coffee has evolved in its forests and highlands alongside extraordinary biodiversity and generations of knowledge about how to grow, harvest and prepare it.
Ethiopia also has a remarkable history. Unlike most of Africa, it maintained its independence through the European scramble for Africa — despite the brutal Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941.
That history matters. Ethiopia’s coffee culture, agricultural knowledge and relationship with the plant have deep roots that were not simply imposed or created through colonial plantation systems.
🌱 The producer
Mustefa Abakeno is a pioneering coffee producer in Agaro, Ethiopia. By securing his own direct-export licence, he has created a more direct route to market and works with neighbouring smallholder farmers — helping to keep relationships and more of the value connected to the communities growing the coffee.
🔥 The roaster
Roasting House carefully small-batch roast these beans to bring out their natural sweetness and delicate fruit notes. Their packaging is also 100% plastic-free and home-compostable.
🚲 The journey to Barra
From the roastery, the coffee makes its final journey to our shop on Sharrow Vale Road with Feral Express, Sheffield’s worker-owned cycle courier service.
And now you can take that story home with you.
Available at Barra Organics as whole beans or freshly ground, ready for you to brew at home.
Ethiopia → independent farmers → Roasting House → Feral Express → Barra Organics → your kitchen.
A global story built through relationships rather than anonymous supply chains. ☕️🌿

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve travelled through Denmark and Sweden, visiting museums, gardens, markets and places that have inspired us in different ways.
One word I’ve brought home is lagom – just enough.
It’s a simple idea, but one that feels relevant. Whether it’s food, work, rest or consumption, it’s a reminder that sometimes enough really is enough.
Thank you for your patience while we’ve been away.
We’re back open this Thursday, with fresh organic and biodynamic fruit and vegetables arriving from Sheffield growers & weekly delivery of Organic veg Organic North and looking forward to seeing everyone again.
See you soon,
Moya and Mark 🌿

One of the things I love about the market is that it’s entirely community-run and staffed by volunteers. It brings a wonderful energy to Sharrow Vale Road and is a brilliant example of what can happen when a community comes together.
If you’re visiting the market, do pop into Barra Organics. We’ll have our usual selection of seasonal organic fruit and vegetables, and we’d also love you to look out for onigirisan, who’ll be outside in a market stall serving their beautiful handmade onigiri.
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who make Sharrow Vale Market possible. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

I’ve been reflecting on what Barra Organics has become over the last few years.
Of course we’re a greengrocer, but I hope we’re also a place where connection is made and conversations happen.
Growing up in Mozambique in the late 1970s taught me that food is precious. Later, arriving back in Britain, I remember being struck by the abundance of our supermarkets. Those experiences still shape the way I think about food today.
I’m not really trying to build a brand. I’m trying to create a place that values good ingredients, supports the people who grow them, and welcomes anyone who wants to ask questions or make connections
I don’t have all the answers, but I do believe that some of the best conversations begin with food.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of those conversations. They continue to shape Barra Organics every day.

it’s going to be a hot, hot, hot ,one this week, so we’re making a small change to our delivery schedule.
All home deliveries due on Wednesday and Thursday will be delivered on Wednesday morning instead. This helps our bike couriers avoid the worst of the heat and means your vegetables and other fresh produce spend less time out in high temperatures.
On a happier note, we’re also welcoming a new local coffee supplier this week, with fresh deliveries from Roasting House.…now in the shop.
Thanks for bearing with us as we adapt to the weather. We’re keen to look after both the people making deliveries and the food they’re delivering.
The shop will be open as usual from 9am–5pm.
Stay cool,
Moya & Sammy

As Barra Organics moves towards a cooperative model, we’re looking for practical ways to work together. Our new locally roasted coffee is delivered by Feral Express, Sheffield’s worker-owned cycle courier service. It’s a small example of how local businesses can support each other while reducing unnecessary transport.

If you thought zero waste was a bit worthy and flavour-compromised, prepare to be proven completely wrong. 🌶️🥬
What if the tastiest bits were the parts we’d been throwing away all along?

Four new zero-waste ferments from The Ferm in London — a fresh perspective on an ancient tradition, with frugality worn proudly. Korean food any self-respecting Yorkshire person could get down with.

Rebecca Ghim brings the fermentation traditions of Gwangju, South Korea, together with Maylin Stanic’s passion for transforming forgotten parts of vegetables into something exceptional.

Possibly the best kimchi-to-air-miles ratio you’ll find without flying to Korea. ✨
