TripAdvisor reviews really are the good, the bad and the ugly 🫣😂 — thankfully, mostly good… with the occasional “well, you can’t please everyone” thrown into the mix!
Now, Malcolm L’s review has certainly given me something to ponder! 🤔
Depending on when this visit took place — and knowing that Wednesday this week was our busiest day — I do wonder if Malcolm took a little trip up to the till to politely ask one of our lovely team about the delay?
Because… 3 for value, 1 for service, 1 for atmosphere and 1 for staff?! 😳🫣
I mean, we know we can’t get it right every single time. We’re human, not robots (although on Wednesdays, sometimes I wish we were! 😂). But one for atmosphere and staff does feel a tiny bit harsh!
And this is the bit that really baffles me… if something isn’t quite right during your visit, PLEASE TELL US! 🙏
We genuinely want the opportunity to sort things out. We can’t fix something we don’t know about — and once you’ve gone home, had a cup of tea, reflected on your experience and then decided to unleash the TripAdvisor score… well, there’s not a lot we can do about it then! 😂
Running a café is hard work. Myself and my husband put everything into it, and so do our amazing team. We care enormously about what we do, from the coffee we serve to the food we put on the table and the atmosphere we create.
So yes, Malcolm, we’ll take the feedback… even if those four little scores of 1 did make us collectively raise an eyebrow! 👀😂
Thankfully, one grumpy review amongst lots and lots of lovely ones isn't going to keep us awake at night.
We’ll carry on doing what we do — serving what we believe is great coffee ☕️, delicious food 🍰, and creating a warm, welcoming place where hopefully 99.9% of you leave happier than when you arrived. ❤️
And to everyone who takes the time to leave us a lovely review, recommend us to friends, come back again and again, or simply tell us face-to-face how much you enjoyed your visit…

All of us here at Smiths Priory Maze Café would like to say a huge thank you to Casablanca for joining us and filling the café with some fantastic music! ❤️🎤
It was such a shame the rain put a bit of a dampener on things 🌧️ and kept the crowds away, but that certainly didn’t stop us from having a great time! We absolutely loved having you here and really enjoyed the music. 🥰🎵
Hopefully next time we’ll have sunshine, a bigger crowd and a much more lively atmosphere! ☀️🙌

Meet the Team! 💕☕️
This is our Grace! 🥰
Not only is she our daughter, but we’re also very lucky to have her as part of our café team. Watching her grow in confidence since she started with us has been so lovely to see, and we honestly couldn’t be prouder of her.
Grace is enthusiastic, hardworking and genuinely loves being at the café. She’s come on leaps and bounds and has developed such lovely customer service skills. She’s bright, bubbly, friendly and always happy for a chat — sometimes we think she enjoys talking to the customers a little too much! 😂❤️
She really is a little ray of sunshine and such a lovely asset to our team. We love seeing her enjoy her job and become more confident every day.
So, if you pop into the café and Grace is there, please do say hello! She’ll be more than happy to have a chat, and hopefully she’ll give you the same warm welcome that she gives everyone who walks through our doors. 💕

Reviews like this are exactly why we love what we do at the café! ❤️☕️
Let’s be honest, running a café isn’t always plain sailing. Some days are a little chaotic, the odd customer leaves less than impressed, and occasionally the day just seems to have other plans! 😂
But that’s all part and parcel of the job — and we wouldn’t change it.
What makes it all worthwhile is knowing that people come through our doors, enjoy great food, good coffee and a warm welcome, and leave with a smile. 😊
Making our customers happy is, and always will be, our number one priority.
So when we receive lovely reviews like this, it gives the whole team a little boost and reminds us exactly why we do what we do. ❤️

Bank Holiday Saturday 🎶☕️
Join us at the café on Saturday 29th August, from 3–6pm, for the wonderful Casablanca, playing music from the fabulous 1930s and 1940s.
We’ll be serving our normal menu until 5pm, along with our afternoon tea, which can also be pre-ordered.
If you love the music, style and atmosphere of this wonderful era, we’d love to see you at the café for an afternoon of great music, good food and fantastic company. ❤️

As always, we share the good and the bad because it’s all part of running a business. We will always listen to genuine feedback, learn from it where appropriate, and, most importantly, defend our staff when we feel they have been unfairly criticised — and this is one of those occasions.
Late last night, we received a strongly worded email regarding a customer’s visit to the café one week ago. The email described the service as “appalling”, claimed the customer felt they were being “treated like dirt”, and alleged that members of staff were eye-rolling at them. It also stated that the food was cold and incorrect.
Now, knowing the members of staff who were working that day, these allegations didn’t sit right with us. It was an extremely busy day, with queues out of the door, and we also had a spell of particularly bad weather. However, being busy is never an excuse for poor service, so we will look into what had happened this day.
We have reviewed the CCTV from the day and spoke to the staff involved to hear their side of the story. What we have found does not match the account given in the complaint.
What is particularly disappointing is that none of these issues were raised with us at the time. Had they been, we would have done everything we could to put things right there and then. Mistakes can happen, particularly during very busy periods, but we have always believed that the right thing to do is to raise them with us so that we have the opportunity to resolve them.
We will always try our very best to provide every customer with great food, good service and a welcoming atmosphere. On exceptionally busy days, there may occasionally be a longer wait than usual, and we simply ask that customers bear this in mind. We are human, and from time to time things can go amiss — but we will always do our best to rectify genuine issues when they are brought to our attention.
I know the staff who were working that day, and I know how hard they work and how much they care about doing a good job. They are polite, well-mannered and give their very best, often working under considerable pressure.
We take genuine complaints seriously, but we also feel strongly that our staff deserve fairness and respect too. They work incredibly hard to keep the café running efficiently and professionally, while creating the friendly atmosphere that so many of our customers enjoy.
So, as always, we will take the good with the bad, listen, learn where necessary and continue to improve — but we will also stand up for our team when we believe they have been unfairly treated.

A little reminder for all our wonderful customers… our next evening event is happening Friday 21st, from 6:30pm until 10:30pm! 🎉
And the best part? Everyone’s welcome and there’s no booking required! 🙌
🍴 We’ll be serving up a small street food menu, alongside our usual drinks and a few specials for the evening.
🎶 We’re also excited to welcome Adam Darricott, who’ll be keeping the good vibes going with 2 x 60-minute acoustic sets throughout the evening. 🎸
So whether you fancy some tasty food, a few drinks, great live music, or simply a lovely evening out, come along and join us!
We’re hoping for another fantastic evening and would love to see lots of familiar faces — and some new ones too! 🥂✨

Happy Monday everyone, and happy new week! ☀️
As we continue through our busy summer season, we'd like to remind all of our customers that there may be a wait for food and drinks during our peak periods. Wherever possible, we will always let you know if there is an extended wait, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.
All food and drink orders are prepared in the order they are received, and every member of our team works incredibly hard to serve everyone as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Yesterday (Sunday 3rd) was one of our busiest days, and despite making customers aware of the wait times, some members of our team were unfortunately subjected to angry and disrespectful behaviour.
While we completely understand that waiting can be frustrating, abusive, aggressive, or disrespectful behaviour towards our staff will not be tolerated. Our team are doing their absolute best under busy conditions, and they deserve to be treated with the same courtesy and respect that they show our customers every day.
Please remember that kindness and patience go a long way. By treating each other with respect, we can continue to provide the warm, welcoming, and enjoyable atmosphere that everyone comes to visit us for.
To all of our wonderful customers who continue to support us with patience, understanding, and a smile—thank you. We truly appreciate you, and we look forward to welcoming you throughout the summer. ☺️💛
