๐ŸŒพWHOLECROP 2026๐ŸŒพ
Winter cereals will soon be approaching the ideal harvest window for wholecrop

Crops can mature rapidly, particularly during periods of warm, sunny weather, so regular crop monitoring is essential

โœ”๏ธKeep a close eye on crop maturity to ensure chopping at the optimum stage
โœ”๏ธ Assess grain development to determine whether processing or rolling will be required at harvest
โœ”๏ธ Harvesting at the correct stage is key to maximising starch content, feed value and clamp quality

If you're doing wholecrop this season and would like advice on harvest timing or feeding value, speak to one of our Davidson's Dairy Tech Consultant

Heat stress doesnโ€™t just affect milking cows โ€” calves can suffer too๐ŸŒก๏ธ

When temperatures rise, calves may experience:
๐Ÿ”น Reduced feed intake
๐Ÿ”น Increased dehydration
๐Ÿ”น Lower daily liveweight gain
๐Ÿ”น A weakened immune system

โš ๏ธ During heat stress, nutrients from milk replacer and starter feed are used to help calves regulate body temperature rather than support growth. This can have lasting effects on growth performance, breeding size, and age at first calving.

Lowa State University states heat stress can begin when calf housing reaches 75ยฐF (24ยฐC)

โ€ข Provide shade to hutches โ€“ this can reduce internal temperatures by 3โ€“4ยฐ and lower calf body temperature by 0.5ยฐ โ€“ compared to calves with no shade.
โ€ข Improve airflow with fans or by opening curtains to keep housing cooler and fresher.

Small changes now can make a big difference to calf health, growth, and future performanceโ˜‘๏ธ

Are your heifers getting more copper than they need?

Research has shown that oversupplying copper can negatively impact dairy heifer fertility. A study from Harper Adams University found that heifers fed high copper levels (32mg/kg DM) had lower conception rates compared with heifers fed recommended levels (16mg/kg DM).

The problem is that copper can come from several different feed sources, making it easy to unknowingly oversupply.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve formulated our Performance Starter pellets & Performance Heifer nuts with Zinpro Performance minerals, to bring copper levels in line with the latest recommendations โ€” helping to support fertility, health, and performance from the very start.

Yesterday, Dairy Tech consultant Michael Carruthers and John Rogers from Davidsons Animal Feeds headed along to The University of Edinburgh Langhill to deliver an informative session to final year veterinary students๐Ÿ“š

The students learned more about ruminant nutrition, how Dairy Tech operate and the day-to-day running of Davidsons Animal Feeds๐Ÿคฉ

Michael and John had a great day and enjoyed answering some excellent questions from the next generation of vets!

Are your calves getting enough NFCs before weaning?

Non-Fibrous Carbohydrates (NFCs) โ€” mainly starch-based energy sources โ€” are now recognised as essential for early rumen development.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ?

Research suggests calves should consume up to 15kg/DM of NFCโ€™s before weaning to support optimal rumen development.

โ€ข Energy utilisation from calf starter feed can be reduced

Why buffer feed this summer?๐ŸŒฑ

Buffering dairy cows at grass is key to maintaining yeild, energy intake and overall performance, especially with changeable weather and grass quality.

What are the benefits?

โ€ข Helps reduce the risk of acidosis when grazing lush, sugary grass
โ€ข Supports rumen health and improves fibre digestion
โ€ข Helps maintain milk yield and butterfat levels
โ€ข Keeps cows healthier, settled, and performing consistently at grass

A balanced rumen means healthier cows and better results from utilisation from your grazing systemโœ…

All buffer meals can be tailor made to suit individal forages, to create the most cost-efficient ration?

Protein quality matters from day one๐Ÿ’ช

In the first weeks of life, calves function as monogastrics, meaning nutrients bypass the rumen and are digested in the small intestine. Thatโ€™s why highly digestible, quality protein sources are essential for early growth and development.

Our Performance Starter Pellets are formulated with bypass proteins, including soya and protected soya, to maximise protein utilisation when calves need it mostโœ…

The result?
โ€ข Stronger early growth
โ€ข Improved feed efficiency
โ€ข Better transition through weaning
โ€ข Support for healthy rumen development

Providing the right nutrition early in life helps establish a strong foundation for long-term productivity and performance๐Ÿ“ˆ
