It’s officially turnout day!! ☀️

Thanks to the wonderful weather we’ve been having the past few days, all our calves have moved out of their pens and onto grass!

As you can see they’re very pleased!

Hope everyone has had a profitable Grand National Day (not us lol!) 🐎

Here at Morrells Wood Farm we would like to put Ant forward for next year!

He may run in the wrong direction (and only when he’s called as you can hear) but look at him go!!

Caught red handed! ✋🏻

This afternoon I found Carys using the “calf brush” (supposedly something every calf rearer needs) on Barney the bull! He was clearly enjoying his TLC and very offended that I interrupted.

We have found that the calf brush goes down a hit with all the calves (and the older stock too!!) and “we” (Carys) use both a hand brush as well as tying up an old brush head in the pen! It also helps keep their coats reasonably tidy from milk residue and other nasty bits!

Still trying to convince Derek (boss man) that we need a £2,000 electric rotating cattle brush! 🤭

Take a guess who’s a bit of an attention seeker… 🩷

This morning I was trying to get a nice video of all the calves going about their business. Fig had other plans.

As you can see, she is used to Carys checking on them (who usually gets in the pen, brush in hand, and makes a fuss of them for about half an hour) because she couldn’t get any closer to me if she tried! She’s certainly not camera shy!

Here’s proof that Fig and Jan are seriously friendly and have no understanding of personal space!

Introducing… our calves! 🐄

At Morrells Wood Farm, we have recently become home to 8 very friendly hand-reared calves, and wanted to make a page to share their antics (because we are finding them very entertaining)!

On March 5th we collected our 6 wonderful Angus x heifers from a local Dairy farm (all handpicked by me for their cuteness and friendliness), with the intention of integrating them into our current Hereford x suckler herd! So I’ll begin by introducing the girls first…

JAN is the oldest of the bunch, and the only calf born in January (hence her name!), but she certainly doesn’t act it! Because she was originally a bottle calf, Jan acts like an overgrown puppy, following me round with lots of kisses and nibbles! She has a little white spot on her head (which may be difficult to capture in any photos as she normally stands so close to the camera that I can only get pictures of her nostrils)!

NELLIE loves to eat. Anything. My jacket, my wellies, my kneecaps, all of it is Nellie’s for the taking! Nellie is a typical Angus, all black and quite large (which makes her very difficult to wrestle when she’s munching something she shouldn’t).

DIPSTICK (named for the white at the end of her tail) doesn’t miss a trick! She’s a very clever girl, especially when there’s food involved, and is the largest of the bunch, taking to the corn pellets quickest and growing the most since she’s been here!

FIG is a little bit dippy. When she first came here, she had to be woken up for her milk (and I would happily oblige because I’m a softie). She’s beautiful and friendly, and she knows it too, expecting princess treatment from even the most serious of farmers! She is named for her brown coat. She and Dipstick are “twins”, both born on the 10th of February!

MARNIE has a bit of an attitude problem (which is only allowed because she’s a very pretty little girl). She is one of the youngest and acts like it, throwing a tantrum if anyone comes near her too quickly (particularly Jack after he tried to take her temperature!). She was originally called Marilyn because of her white beauty spot and her diva attitude, but shortly became Marnie because Marilyn felt out of keeping on a farmyard!

LUCKY is, well, lucky. Not only is she number 13 (and we were being optimistic), but she was also born upside down and is very lucky to be alive! She’s another beautiful brown heifer with a curly tuft on the top of her head (which is starting to look like an 80s hairstyle!) and white socks on her back feet. Her favourite game is running laps around the pen as soon as anyone is trying to bed up.

Shortly after collecting the girls, we decided it was going well enough to take on a couple more calves. On March 11th we collected 2 boys from the same Dairy farm. These were the Friesian steers who were struggling to find a home, and we decided to call them Ant and Dec!

ANT is the bigger of the two boys and a really gentleman! He was a bit reluctant with people at first, but soon got comfortable (especially after a few scratches), and is now one of the most friendly! He has excellent recall (lol) and loves to come and say hello to any visitors to his barn. He looks like a typical picture-book “cow”, with handsome black and white markings and a heart-shaped white splodge on his forehead.

DEC is a little cheekier! He’s not a big fan of the whole “say hello to humans thing” and would much rather be left alone (unless there’s milk involved and then he could make an exception)! However, he’s a big fan of dogs, particularly Connie, and loves playing hide and seek games with her whenever he can (although I’m not sure Connie knows she’s playing)!

Below are all the different close-ups (some times too close-ups) of our calves, so you can get to know them one by one!

Follow the page to keep up with all of our calves and their mischief! 🐮
