🐷☀️ Keeping cool the piggy way! ☀️🐷

Our Berkshire × Gloucester Old Spot piglets have certainly worked out the best place to be in this hot weather — straight into the wallow! 😂💦

There’s nothing happier than pigs with plenty of space to roam, root around and enjoy a good muddy wallow when the sun comes out.

Proper outdoor-reared pigs, doing exactly what pigs love to do. 🐖🌿

Our original sow is looking fantastic again and, hopefully, she’s back in pig. Giving her a break after her last litter has done her the world of good, and she’s back to her best.

She’s now running with our Berkshire × GOS boar as we’re working to produce what we believe is an incredible combination of flavour, bringing together two of England’s finest native breeds.

🥩 GOS Saddleback pork is also available now in a range of cuts, so if you’d like to stock the freezer or fancy trying some proper free-range rare breed pork, just drop us a message.

🚜 Why does our pork taste different?

Because our pigs actually get to be pigs.

At Poppleford Rare Breed Pork, our rare-breed pigs spend their days outdoors in the fresh Devon air, rooting around under the oak trees, running, playing and growing at their own pace. No rushing, no shortcuts – just proper traditional pork with the flavour many people remember from years ago.

Our latest pork is now available and can be cut just how you like it.

🐖 Rare Breed Pork – Available to Reserve 🐖

On Monday, two of our Gloucestershire Old Spot × Saddleback pigs will be making their final journey to my cousin’s family-run abattoir for processing.

One pig has already been reserved, leaving one pig available.

You can reserve:
🥩 Whole pig
🥩 Half pig
🥩 Quarter pig
🥩 5kg meat box
🥩 10kg meat box

Our pigs are high-welfare, free-range, with plenty of space to roam and enjoy life. We believe that if an animal is reared for food, it deserves the very best life possible from start to finish. Although this is what they have been raised for, they will still be greatly missed.

All pork will be professionally butchered, vacuum packed and ready for your freezer.

If you’d like to reserve a whole, half, quarter or meat box, please send us a message before it’s all allocated.

We always try to give our pigs the very best life possible. They have plenty of space to roam, root around and express their natural behaviours, rather than being confined. They have access to shade from the trees, fresh water at all times, and we’ve even used the digger bucket to create a proper wallow for them.

Pigs don’t sweat, so a wallow isn’t just somewhere to play it’s essential for keeping them cool during the warmer weather and also helps protect their skin from the sun and insects.

We regularly feed them a varied diet alongside their balanced pig ration, giving them fresh fruit and vegetables as treats. Watching them root around, wallow in the mud and simply enjoy being pigs is exactly how we believe they should be raised.

Happy, stress-free pigs don’t just have a better quality of life—they also produce better-quality pork. Their welfare will always come first here at Poppleford Rare Breed Pork.

A little excitement today! 🐖

While carrying out one of our regular checks, we discovered one of the pen gates had somehow been opened. The rope we’d used to secure it was found over 10 metres away, neatly coiled up, which was certainly a surprise!

Thankfully, because we don’t just check the pigs morning and evening, but also make several random visits throughout the day, we spotted it quickly.

Out of 15 pigs, only 2 had actually left the pen. The other 13 were quite happy lying in their wallow and hadn’t gone anywhere!

Rather than chasing the two escape artists, we grabbed some fresh fruit and vegetables and started feeding the pigs that were still in the pen. As soon as the two wanderers heard feeding time had started, they came trotting back one by one. Food won over freedom! 🥕🍎

It just goes to show that well-settled pigs don’t usually wander far when they’re happy and know where home (and dinner!) is.

Needless to say, the gate has now been made much more secure! 😂

A little secret we’ve been keeping… 🐷

We’ve been keeping this one a little bit quiet, but it’s finally time to share it!

Meet the first of our Gloucestershire Old Spots × Berkshire cross piglets. We’re really excited to see how these youngsters develop, combining the hardiness and excellent mothering instincts of the GOS with the fantastic meat quality that Berkshires are renowned for.

This is just the beginning of something we’re really looking forward to, and we’ll be sharing plenty of updates as they grow.

Welcome to the Poppleford Rare Breed Pork family, little ones! 🐖🌿

Picked Jacob up from Forest School today and he wasn’t in the best of moods. He didn’t even want to come and see the pigs and asked me to take him straight home.

Funny how quickly that changed though. The moment he saw them, he was straight over cleaning out their muddy water trough without being asked. ❤️

Today they got around 10kg of potatoes (they definitely seem to prefer the red ones!) and a big bag of carrots. And, as always, there’s one pig that’s first over to say hello every single time.

There’s something about spending time with animals. It helps you collect your thoughts while enjoying the cool breeze and forgetting about everything else for a little while.

It’s moments like these that remind me just how good animals can be.

Well… at least I’ve done one thing right today! 😂

I was all set to record a video of feeding the pigs… only to realise I’d forgotten to press record. 🤦‍♂️ So here’s take two!

The Berkshire piglets and our GOS × Saddleback stores certainly aren’t complaining. Today’s menu was carrots 🥕, potatoes 🥔, apricots 🍑 and red peppers 🌶️, and judging by the speed they disappeared, I’d say it got their approval!

Sometimes farming keeps you humble… and sometimes you just forget to hit record! 😂🐷
